Song of the Day: Down – Trevor Black

Today’s song is Down by Canadian rocker TREVOR BLACK. The track will be coming his first full length album…keep you posted on the release date.

The singer/songwriter mixes heavy punk with alternative overtones, possessing all the  ingredients of BLACK SABBATH and MONTROSE. Down made it to the hotspot today, as beyond the raging guitars (well executed by the man himself, I must say), there are serious lyrics of experiencing loss and  failure due to the lack of belief in others  – I guess that’s something  we can all relate to – have a listen.

Star Song: The Arrival – Latka

Today’s song is called The Arrival by four-piece Canadian band LATKA. The single is from their debut album, My Bright Heart released earlier this month.

In their bio, the rock-pop act said they are ‘set out to bring POP music that you can really move to’ –well they certainly achieved that! The Arrival is a fun, feel-good production that really gets you moving –listen for yourself. If The Arrival put a spring in your step, head over to their Bandcamp page and check out the album.

With two EPs and an album underneath their belt, LATKA is set to take their music beyond their hometown Winnipeg and break into the national and international scenes…watch this space!

News: Flamingo Bay’s debut album out in September

If you’re really missing that good old fashion rock and roll, well Dillon Henningson, Vince Rankin and Kris Gies – aka FLAMINGO BAY – have made your day! The Canadian rockers are releasing their debut full length album Loco Pony in September. These guys are hot property right now as they are fully booked up for live shows in their hometown in Ontario. Wanna sample the goods? Well here’s Serpentine, the first single from the album. If you’re warming to the gritty rock track – good news, you download it for free on Bandcamp. While you’re here, it’s worth checking out the equally gritty and pulse racing single, Bleed (ace!)

They scooped the Best Alternative Rock Act at Toronto’s Independent Music Awards in 2012 as well as being nominated for Best New Act at Hamilton Music Awards in the same year. They even shared the stage with heavyweights, such as The Spin Doctors and Sex Pistol’s Glen Matlock- it’s hard to believe that Melissa Marchese (lead vocals), Mike Chetcuti (guitar and vocals) and Paul Fontes (Drums) aka WEEKEND RIOT CLUB started out in 2010.

No doubt, the Ontario rockers’ roaring success will continue with their first full-length album PSYCHOTROPIA. Released earlier this month,  there’s two sides to this 12 track production: You have the in-your-face, full on rock as demonstrated in Drink Up, Red Light, Green Light, Come Back Home and Give It All. Personally I’m a big fan of a softer and mellow side of PSYCHOTROPIA.  The-pick-me- up track, I Will Carry You, offer words of encouragement that you can listen to over and over when you need scraping off the floor (excuse the expression!) If you get a chance to listen to the album, go straight to the last track Perfect Night, as it’s simply magical. Marchese’s vocals (which are usually throaty and gutsy) turn all soft and full of emotion, which works really well with the lone guitar. I know I mentioned it before, but it’s simply magical!

So have a listen of PSYCHOTROPIA and see if you like the explosive or mellow side of the album (answers below please!) In the meantime, here’s another one of my favourite songs, Things Are Looking Up Again.
