Mixtape Review: Potty Mouth Vol. 2 – JaySIN

Potty Mouth Vol 2

JAYSIN resurface once again with his latest release Potty Mouth Vol.2 . The 12 track mixtape displays the young emcee’s super rapid flow, questioning the meaning of life and the obstacles that comes out of nowhere and presents itself.  The beats featured in this project definitely surpass the preceding mixtape, Potty Mouth Vol.1 – each track sports an easy-cruising and a smoother, quality-perfect bassline. Check it out here.

Mixtape Review: I Just Wanna Be Heard Vol.2 – Kwame Katana

Kwane Katana

Now I’m going to be real honest here…when I first clapped my eyes on the album cover, I did a massive internal eye roll, thinking it’s just another rapper wanting some sweet booty and all the cars and gold in the world. But it was my duty, as an independent music writer, to give it a trial…

…So I pressed play and I had to shut my month. As I listen to the mixtape, I quickly realise KWAME KATANA is just a young guy who is going through some personal struggles as well as finding his way to be a successful rapper.

The lyrics of hurt, love and sheer determination, is perfectly complemented by out-of-this world bassline that make you sit up and take note (I mean REALLY take note). The 20-track production gets better with on-point samples from mainly 90s R&B class acts such as SWV, JOHNNY GILL, LAURYN HILL and JADE.

Well after listening to I Just Wanna Be Heard, I (re)learned a valuable lesson…never judge a book (or in this case a mixtape) by its cover.

Album Review: Voice of the City – K*Ners

It may be fast approaching winter, but  UK hip-hop artist  K*NERS kept it sizzling hot with his album, The Voice of the City.

Released late last month, the Bristol-based hot property collaborated with a string of heavyweights including  SAWY, CHARLIE SLOTH and ROOT MANUVA for explosive tracks that will sit quite neatly in your collection.

Mixtape Review: To Be A Star – E-Thrilla

To Be A Star Cover 2 E-Thriller

UK Rapper/songwriter E-THRILLA left me wanting more with his EP, Room For Improvement (featured back in March on NEW LEASE MUSIC). It’s been a long (ish) time but he returns, finally dropping his debut mixtape, To Be A Star.

Did it quench my thirst? Like the EP, Room For Improvement, his trademark of sweet atmospheric melody was featured in  his latest project but there’s a stronger punch of hip-hop with the presence of electronica  and disco. Each track documents the Mancunian’s determination to make it big time.

So to answer the question, To Be A Star sure did quench my thirst and if you’re always in search of hip-hop tracks that push the boundaries, well I’m sure this mixtape will hit the spot.

Mixtape Review: The Greatest Show On Thirst – Cypher Clique

Cypher Clique The Greatest Show on Thirst

Delaware hip-hop group CYPHER CLIQUE dropped their mixtape, The Greatest Show on Thirst earlier this month.

The ingenious balance of a super smooth bass and that lick of sweet melody just cruises throughout the 17-track album. The trio said their latest mixtape is ‘suited to a summer playlist’ – I disagree. The project is also well suited for kicking back on those autumn and winter nights.
