Mixtape Review: Rawest – Fly Von

Fly Von Rawest mixtape

From the moment he leaked tracks, Tell Me Wassup and She Hates Love, FLY VON was itching to unleash his second full-length mixtape, Rawest.

As you probably guessed, it’s now ready for your inspection! The mixtape begins with an explosion of ridiculously crazy (and short-lived) guitar riffs which detours down the route of downtempo hip-hop and, at times, slightly blurs into the realms of alternative R&B…a combination that is his RAWEST material to date. Check it out here.

Must Listens: Ambition, Not So Bad, Dreams 4 Two, Deal With, Tell Me Wassup, King of Raw, What They Really Want

New Track: Escapism – Benjamin AD

Benjamin AD Escapism

BENJAMIN A.D unveils the third installment in a series of monthly singles, Escapism. It is the next slice of self-examining, poetic hip-hop akin to the likes of musical heavyweights Kendrick Lamar and Ghostpoet, and which has earned Benjamin praise from The 405 and Clash, among others.

Following on from his last track, Mandatory Mantra, the South Londoner has once again collaborated with critically acclaimed Canadian producer Junia T, who worked with the artist on his previous releases Monster’s Ball and Come My Way, and who is best known for his work with Little Simz.

BENJAMIN AD once more brings his unique brand of rhythmic philosophy to his latest track Escapism, which he explains focuses on ‘…looking at things under a microscope rather than skimming in our busy lives’, perfectly hypothesizing on human weaknesses and mental health.

He beautifully pairs frenetic drum beats with melancholy jazz to tap into his thoughts on trying to escape reality by any means. As Benjamin reveals, ‘the track is just an elaboration on us all being escapists, some more than others but whatever your vice(s) is/are, from a TV show, to films, to video games, to drugs, booze, books, whatever…They’re all your escape from reality for whatever reason.’

Accompanying Escapism is a video directed by Jonathan Gilbert – the creative director behind Panomatics, the leading Virtual Tour supplier in the world. Shot in both South London & Koh Phangan, Thailand using drone cameras, Gilbert states that they were ‘inspired by Prodigy videos from our childhood and films like Project X’ to create the feeling that ‘wherever you look, Ben is struggling with his own thoughts’. Coupling bleak shots of Benjamin in turmoil in a London flat with lush panoramic footage of Thailand, it is a thought-provoking exploration of struggle and escape.

Having already garnered support from The Source and RWD to name but a few, the conscious hip-hopper  looks set to impress again with his latest track. Perfecting his craft with each new release, it is his ability to consistently create emotionally charged, revelatory hip-hop that makes him a standout talent for 2016.

Go on, check out Escapism.

New Track: Thinking About It (Let It Go) KVR Remix – Nathan Goshen

Nathan Goshen Let it Go

Dutch producer KVR takes on Israeli pop star Nathan Goshen’s emotional track Thinking About It (Let It Go), dropped last Friday via Scandinavian label disco:wax.

Already a roaring success in his home country, named Man of The Year and Singer of The Year by one of Israel’s biggest national radio stations, Nathan Goshen’s first two albums went GOLD; a success crowned by winning ‘Composer of the Year’ in 2011 from non-profit rights corporation ACUM. Now, via a bedroom in Holland, 14-year-old KVR is taking Goshen’s music to the international stage; and with a little help from disco:wax he looks set to take the world by storm.

After stumbling across the teenager’s first rough version of the remix on Soundcloud, Alexander Ash of disco:wax – which is home to the likes of rising star Tobtok – explains that “this track just made me stop. So I reached out to him and found out he was only 14. We had to contact his parents…then we got in contact with Nathan’s people to introduce the remix to them.”

KVR discovered the original single, written and composed by Nathan Goshen, which has racked up close to 1 million hits on YouTube since its release last summer, and first created the remix on Fruity Loops with nothing but his own personal computer.

Combining a 14-year-old’s abundant natural ability, and building upon Goshen’s overwhelming success in his home country, the remix of Thinking About It (Let It Go) looks set to cement them both as one’s to watch on the international stage.

KVR‘s version of Thinking About It (Let it Go) is now available on iTunes.
