Song of the Day: Always – Toddla T Meets Andrea Martin (ft Silkki Wonda)

Toddla T meets Andrea Martin Always

For die-hard ravers who’s still reminiscing about the good times at Notting Hill Carnival, well here’s something for you from TODDLA T.

Sweet reggae vibes and the off-beats of the drums bring the Jamaican sunshine, whilst the power and soul coming from the vocals of Andrea Martin and the patois from Silkki Wonda, make this four-minute treat the perfect remedy for even the darkest of summers day.

The Sheffield native has had a year of big productions that have seen his records hit a multitude of radio, Spotify and TV playlists, however this is his first self-named TODDLA T release via his new label Steeze.

Ever the visionary, TODDLA T’s music has always been heavily influenced by music and culture from around the world, particularly the genres that represent a voice or culture. From the essence and soul of R&B, the energy of grime, the vibes of reggae and dancehall to the excitement of electronic beats, TODDLA T productions stand out on a limb for their daring and courageous sounds.

Having hosted a stage for both days of the iconic Notting Hill Carnival with his sound system on Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August for the first time ever, Always is stark reminder that he brings the vibes to the speakers as well as the party, and is a perfect taster to a new period in this artist’s career.

Upcoming Release: I Need You – Slowes

Slowes I Need You

Merging their profound love for alternative psychedelic pop with the dreamy sounds of chillwave, Danish duo SLOWES is set to release  their silky smooth single I Need You.

Featuring textured lo-fi vocals, bold retro keys and an infectious yet simplistic chorus which sonically mirrors the outburst of the lyrics, the track has all the ingredients for a piece of alt-pop perfection. An intimate, personal track with a nostalgic feel, set to be accompanied by fitting DIY visuals.

Jack Kilburn (vocals) and Anders Hamann (drums) formed Slowes in 2015 under the initial name More, pooling their significant talents to craft a well-defined soundscape that sees them combine effective piano chords, head-nodding beats, phased-out synths and reflective vocal melodies. The release of their first single in February of this year – the dreamy ballad Sweet – gained the approval of Indie Shuffle and racked up over 10,000 plays during the track’s first week. Now, I Need You – recorded and co-produced by Christian Alex Petersen, the man behind Danish success stories such as Mew, Virgin Suicide and the much-hyped LISS – looks set to propel them to ever greater heights.

With the wheels already in motion for their live set, the band will perform at Copenhagen’s Trailerpark Festival at the end of July, as well as playing a summer gig at the city’s Pumpehuset in August, hosted by Bitchslap Magazine and Silvertip Agency. Following this, they will make their London debut at The Social on November 1st ahead of the release of their debut EP in early 2017.

Straddling the line between organic pop and chillwave, I Need You is a commendable testament to Slowes’ burgeoning signature sound, and will mark the duo as one of their country’s freshest exports.

I Need You will be released this Friday…for now, have a listen to the single.

New Music Video: Oxygen – Nicky Davey

Nicky Davey Oxygen

Nick Green and Dave Rosser officially formed the soulful project NICKY DAVEY in 2011. They started out just making records together under various aliases until they carved a sound they could truly call their own.

Constantly striving to reinvent the modern pop song, they were given the opportunity to work closely with Odd Future affiliates, The Internet. Lead Singer Nick Green’s vocal production on The Internet’s Ego Death helped earn it a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album. Back in February, Nicky Davey were the only duo unsigned to a major label to be featured on the NOW 57 compilation.

Oxygen is an infectious and sensual slow jam layered with Nick Green’s soulful vocals. Written with long time collaborator and friend Syd Tha Kyd (The Internet) the song is about the first stages of love, Nick adds: ‘I wanted to be honest to myself and others about the way I felt. I feel like as songwriters we all write songs in some shape or form about our love interest/inspiration’. Directed by Dan Stowell and Rich Yodsukar, the black-and-white visuals emphasize the raw feel of the song.

Oxygen is the first single taken from their upcoming album XXX set to be released later this year.
