Upcoming Release: Look Back In Laugher – Hugh

hughLondon-based quartet, HUGH continue their beguiling journey  with the release of their latest single, Look Back In Laughter. The three-minute smoothie is laced with a positive message, veiled by the contrasting melancholy production. Sewn together by slow-burning synths, crackling percussion and a glimmering, transient guitar to cut through the mix, the alluring song sits in the amorphous zone between trip-hop, R&B and synth-pop.

Consisting of Joshua Idehen (vocals), Izzy Brooks(vocals), Andy Highmore (production/keys) and Tino Kolarides(Guitars) Look Back In Laughter sees Joshua take more of a leading role with the vocals, where we see his background in spoken word come to the forefront of the track. His warm baritone vocal is full of subtle wordplay and charming London colloquialisms which, when paired with the contrasting piercing pop tone from Izzy, adds another dimension to their genre fusing sound, Look Back In Laughter is a soothing reminder to not dwell on the negatives of life as one day we’re just “gonna look back and laugh” – a positive message which has the power to resonate with us all.

Musically melding sounds from a myriad of influences and cultures, HUGH continue to transcend genre and create captivating music which has earned them praises from the likes of Huw Stephens, Stereogum, Pigeons And Planes and The Guardian.

HUGH are fast becoming one of the stand-out artists in a musical landscape where the blurred lines between genres are becoming increasingly prevalent. This is evident in the live environment as well as on record, and in order to support the latest release they will be playing a special one-off showcase at Elektrowerkz in London on 12th October.

Upcoming Release: A Place Far Away – Goldsands

goldsands

GOLDSANDS’ latest single A Place Far Away tells the story of a faded film star’s unlikely bond with a neglected young woman after crossing paths in Tokyo, drawing inspiration from cult classic movie Lost in Translation. Sonically the five-minute masterpiece perfectly captures the size and scale of the movie’s cityscapes, whilst also encapsulating the mood of the relationship between the two characters. Self-produced in a converted apartment in Birmingham, the track was later mastered by Geoff Pesche at the legendary Abbey Road Studios.

GOLDSANDS’ genre-defying sound is most comparable to groups like Radiohead, The Beatles and Coldplay, and is the result of the band members’ eclectic musical backgrounds. Liam’s rock background provides a driving groove, Tom brings a jazz flare, Ramsey takes his cue from the experimental sounds of the 60’s, James gives suitable guitar ambience and Matt is a sucker for a pop hook. Two of the bands members Matt and Tom Rhodes are brothers, adding to the group’s tight sense of synergy. The group is set to embark on a UK tour spanning from London to Edinburgh – See their website for further details.

A Place Far Away is out on Friday…for now, have a listen.

Upcoming Release: The Coast – Ren

ren

After the success of his debut single, My Heart Belongs To Ireland singer-songwriter REN, releases his second single The Coast on October 7 .

Delightfully boasting a soul-warming folksy sensation, the three-and-a-half production documents the Newcastle tinker’s trip around Europe.

Speaking of his big adventure, he said: ” To get the funds together, I converted my van into a camper van and lived in it in London whilst working a 9-5. I used to turn up to work every morning in running shorts and pretend that I had run into work just so I could use the office showers!

I started my trip by getting the ferry to Norway from England with my van and from there I drove through Scandinavia, central Europe and a bit of Eastern Europe. I ended up living in the North of Holland for a little while before I moved to France for 5 months.”

If you’re in the Newcastle area on the 1st Oct, drop by Alphabetti Theatre for his single launch…but for now, sample have a listen.

Album Review: Pentagon Memoirs – 3Bubble & J.Gray

Pentagon Memoirs NLM

OK folks, hope you’re ready for something completely FRESH. Just three months after releasing their debut album, Live from the Pentagon, hip-hop duo 3BUBBLE & J.GRAY are set to slam another one, coming in the form of Pentagon Memoirs.

Their latest collection displays how sonically diverse these guys are – from dabbling into a little golden hip-hop, real R&B/slow jams to delightfully wayward bangers that’s arguably on par with Outkast…something tells me that their names will dominate the web in months to come.

Pentagon Memoirs is out this Monday via iTunes and Amazon…but for now, check out one of the tracks, Bulletproof.

Must Listens: Bulletproof, Back to Work, Mac’n, No Strings, Better Days, Vogue

Upcoming Release: I Need You – Slowes

Slowes I Need You

Merging their profound love for alternative psychedelic pop with the dreamy sounds of chillwave, Danish duo SLOWES is set to release  their silky smooth single I Need You.

Featuring textured lo-fi vocals, bold retro keys and an infectious yet simplistic chorus which sonically mirrors the outburst of the lyrics, the track has all the ingredients for a piece of alt-pop perfection. An intimate, personal track with a nostalgic feel, set to be accompanied by fitting DIY visuals.

Jack Kilburn (vocals) and Anders Hamann (drums) formed Slowes in 2015 under the initial name More, pooling their significant talents to craft a well-defined soundscape that sees them combine effective piano chords, head-nodding beats, phased-out synths and reflective vocal melodies. The release of their first single in February of this year – the dreamy ballad Sweet – gained the approval of Indie Shuffle and racked up over 10,000 plays during the track’s first week. Now, I Need You – recorded and co-produced by Christian Alex Petersen, the man behind Danish success stories such as Mew, Virgin Suicide and the much-hyped LISS – looks set to propel them to ever greater heights.

With the wheels already in motion for their live set, the band will perform at Copenhagen’s Trailerpark Festival at the end of July, as well as playing a summer gig at the city’s Pumpehuset in August, hosted by Bitchslap Magazine and Silvertip Agency. Following this, they will make their London debut at The Social on November 1st ahead of the release of their debut EP in early 2017.

Straddling the line between organic pop and chillwave, I Need You is a commendable testament to Slowes’ burgeoning signature sound, and will mark the duo as one of their country’s freshest exports.

I Need You will be released this Friday…for now, have a listen to the single.
