Song of the Day: Black Gold – Timaj Garad

Ethiopian Toronto-based singer-songwriter and poet TIMAJ GARAD presents her single, ‘Black Gold’, the leading number from her forthcoming debut ‘Blooming at the Mouth’ EP, set for release tomorrow, 5th March.

‘Black Gold’ is an anthemic ode to and love song for Black Muslim women. Serving as both a celebration and a sanctuary, the single shares the realities of Timaj and many others in an honest way, without sugarcoating the collective trauma, while simultaneously providing space for Black Muslim joy and glory.

Song of the Day: Awake With Crystal Eyes – K O D A E

Easing you into the weekend is emerging R&B/Pop group, K O D A E with their sultry debut single, ‘Awake With Crystal Eyes’.

Formed in the spring of 2019 the five-piece act’s unique backgrounds brings a fresh new flavour to the Canadian music table with this latest offering: Annie da Silva’s velvety voice and cutting lyrics, Owen Mcpherson’s gospel roots on the deep five, Seyoung Lee’s lush jazz textures on the keys, Curtis Sauer’s ambitious groove on the drums and Eric Osborne’s fluid harmonies on the guitar.

Recorded at The National Music Centre, ‘Awake With Crystal Eyes’ is one of the three singles leading up to their first full length album to be recorded in the spring of 2021. Check out the uber classy track below…

 

Song of the Day: Running Inside Of My Brain – Erica Knox

Layered with airy soundscapes and an infectious bassline, ERICA KNOX‘s latest single, ‘Running Inside Of My Brain’, takes inspiration from a her past relationship that sadly wasn’t meant to be. Ignoring so many red flags and obvious signs, Erica kept eye firmly on a fairytale ending.

The Toronto singer/songwriter further explains on the experience: “I wanted that so bad with this person, but it just wasn’t happening, no matter how hard I tried. Although this person was wrong for me, I still had to grieve the relationship, and accept that I have to surrender to these feelings until they’ve fully healed.”

Erica’s ‘Running Inside of My Brain’ is a reminder that you have to put yourself first when it comes to love. It’s not worth losing yourself to be with someone else, no matter how good the ending could be. Check it out below…

Song of the Day: Circles – Velvet Skyline

Texas-based modern alternative rock band, VELVET SKYLINE uses music as forms of escape and therapy, using strong and vivid themes and imagery to celebrate empowerment, tackle past trauma and to show strength in uncertain times.

Their new single, ‘Circles’ introduces their upcoming LP, ‘What We Have In Common’, alternating between tranquil intimate soundscapes and roaring influences of 90s-inspired progressive rock and grunge, all brought together by frontwoman Taylor Seerden soothing vocals.

Song of the Day: Better Now – Lara

Presenting LARA, a 19-year-old Australian-based keys player, singer/songwriter and producer into today’s hot spot, with her soothing self written alt-pop single, ‘Better Now’.

Classically trained on the piano since the age of eight, Lara has since diversified into R&B/soul, funk, disco, contemporary and electronic music. For the last two years, she has studied music on scholarship with Berklee College of Music in Boston and ventured out on the scene with her debut album ‘Bored Games’, released in late 2019.

2020 saw German-born Lara releasing singles, ‘Wall’ , ‘Circles’ and ‘Better Now’, with an album to follow shortly. ‘Better Now’ was chosen as the blog’s Song of the Day for its serene feather light electropop backdrop, providing the way for the guitar riffs, giving off a 70s inspired soulful rock vibe with harmonic vocals that’s reminiscent of 70’s Stevie Hicks (of Fleetwood Mac)
