Song of the Day: Where I Left You – Chynna Lewis

Taken from her forthcoming debut EP ‘What Are Friends For’, CHYNNA LEWIS’ single, ‘Where I Left You’, showcases the Toronto-based singer-songwriter’s heart wrenching vivid lyrics and vocals, which leaves a lingering impression of a love once lost.

“I wrote this song during a time when my heart felt so broken that I thought I would never move past it,” says the captivating Taiwanese-Canadian Pop/R&B artist who was recently invited to sing the Canadian national anthem at a Toronto Raptors home game. “I had it in my head that love meant fighting through the rough patches, and when things ended I found myself still craving that dysfunction as a mode of comfort. At my lowest I went back to that ex, knowing that seeing them would set me back from all the healing I had done, but I didn’t care.”

She adds: “I wrote this song to capture how I felt at that time, like ‘fuck it, I’d rather be in pain than be alone.’ That was also when I had to face the fact that I was lacking in self-love; not an easy thing to come to terms with. It’s a very cathartic experience for me to release this song. It reminds me that sometimes we have to play with fire to learn our lessons, and that was a big one for me.”

Renowned for being an ultra versatile and skilled vocalist, Chynna has supported artists such as Ed Sheeran, Jessie Reyez, Charlotte Day Wilson, and Jully Black as a backup singer for the past decade.

Song of the Day: Keepsake – Handbook

One decade after his debut album ‘Handprints’, HANDBOOK returns with ‘Keepsake’, featuring two sublime tracks, instrumental ‘Keepsake’ and ‘No End’ featuring rapper, Supreme Sol who gets into the lush hip-hop cooking with the finest chill spicy soulful ingredients.

For the single Keepsake, Handbook says: “This track conjures up feelings of security. There is a feeling of being centred that anchors the piece, as well as a feeling of being content and happy. A keepsake is a memento, a reminder of someone, or somewhere, one has left behind: this is how music can work sometimes – it takes you back to a certain time, and a certain place.

So go on, have a listen to ‘Keepsake’ and ‘No End’… and if you like what you hear, be sure to look out for his full length LP coming out this spring.

Song of the Day: Leg Or Arm – GirlzluhDev

Inland Empire rapper GIRLZLUHDEV‘s sensual single ‘Leg or Arm’ brings a bit of summer warmth to the depths of winter. The track, which is out now on Capitol Records, is built around soft keyboards and West Coast bounce that provide a canvas for Dev’s mischievous and fun vocals.

The dizzy, intimate production of ‘Leg or Arm’ feels like a dreamy afternoon in the California sun. It’s pure warmth, an escape from the troubles of the world. Dev flows like a breeze, sipping Shirley Temples, messing around with a girl, and playfully wondering if he’ll end up being talked about in her groupchat. When he croons about “riding round with blicky and designer clothes,” it sounds less like a threat than a positive affirmation. Dev places gangsta tropes in new contexts, making every bar feel like a celebration. He’s the fun-loving ball of energy and melody that rap needs, next in a lineage of West Coast rap-singers.

‘Leg or Arm’ follows a hot streak of memorable singles from Dev, including the pounding ‘Gas Me Up’ and the sombre ‘Dead Bro.’ This track kicks off a new year for the 18-year-old rising star as he continues to build on the success that began with 2020’s ‘Tooka,’ which launched him to the national stage and earned him a deal with Capitol. The game needs rappers as charismatic as Dev, and with each passing track, he’s proving that he’s rare indeed. Dev has amassed over 34 million streams in the U.S. alone.

Song of the Day: F**king Like King Kong – Marina Massanova

Artist/producer MARINA MASSANOVA sent shockwaves into the music-scene and beyond with her single ‘F*cking You Like King Kong’. Tik Tok banned her video for explicit content – and YouTube followed closely behind – but despite this, the mere corporate censorship would never slow her down; it would only serve to inspire her.

The single is built on sexually explicit, confident empowering vibes, and unapologetic self-expression – the fact that social media moved so quickly to ban Marina’s art & music only furthered the points she’s been making all along. As a result, “Fcking You Like King Kong” instantly became THE anthem for celebrating exactly who you are, and turning this life into everything you desire.

Providing a whole lotta FUN along the way in the process, the sensational, low-down & dirty electro-based, bass-driven beat is a perfect pairing with the spectacular charisma & X-factor talent of Marina’s extraordinary vocals. Combined with her new video, which intentionally turns the camera back towards society via a Zoom-inspired theme to hold the mirror up to who we are as the truest version of ourselves, ‘Fcking You Like King Kong’ becomes every bit as much of a riot to experience onscreen as it is through the speakers. Exploring what could happen if everyone in the Zoom room just let loose for a moment, turned the music UP where it belongs, and set themselves completely free to do whatever was on their mind – ‘Fcking You Like King Kong’ is ultimately about expression in its most beautiful forms.

Song of the Day: La La La – Rayne Storm (ft. Sticky Fingaz)

RAYNE STORM is back with a trail of singles (‘La La La’, ‘Old School, New School’ and ‘All Along’) coming off his upcoming album ‘AudioCity’. The project is described as a triple threat of collabs with Sticky Fingaz of Onyx, Swifty Mcvay of D12 & DMC of the iconic Hip-Hop group Run DMC.

Making it to today’s top spot, ‘La La La’ speaks on the effects of growing up around guns and gun violence with Sticky Fingaz doing double duty with a featured verse and chorus. With straight forward and honest lyrics, the track doesn’t glorify nor run from its truths and descriptive nature.

‘La La La’ makes a great introduction into Rayne’s album slated for release 21st February…but for now, get tuck in on the track below…
