Song of the Day: Badgurl – Groovy

Rising neo-pop/R&B artist GROOVY returns with the release of his intoxicating Jersey Club single ‘BADGURL’. The breakthrough act taps into the cultural phenomenon that put 2000’s R&B on the map, channeling love, lust and desire as he shares his ode dedicated to all the ladies who are looking to set themselves free by embracing their wild side. GROOVY’s vocals are easy on the ears, gracefully crossing between genres as go-to producer Alejandro flexes his ability to take a smooth slice of Y2K R&B and morph it into an ambitious Jersey Club anthem. Booming staple triplet drums, velvety sampled vocals and hypnotic keys swirl together to create a world fuelled by steamy passion, one that is sure to draw listeners in upon first listen.

The sophisticated badgurl anthem is accompanied by an official music video directed by Chris Andrade. The cult-inspired visual follows a beautiful girl who yearns for sexual empowerment and freedom. She stumbles across a magazine ad calling for all badgurls and decides to call the number listed. Soon after, she finds herself at an eerie warehouse surrounded by a group of alluring women dressed in black cloaks. GROOVY makes his entrance as the charismatic leader figure, and the two share a drink from a chalice, symbolizing the indoctrination of the newest badgurl.

‘BAD GURL’ follows the Union native’s latest release “jersey luv,” which was praised by media tastemakers around the world including BET, Mixtape Madness and more. The track also landed placements on top editorial playlists, including Spotify’s Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds Hip-Hop and Apple Music’s The New New York. OUT TODAY: Listen To Natanya’s Candid Single, ‘Angel’

NATANYA shares heartfelt new single ‘Angel’ via AURA – a new London-based imprint under the seminal label for global sounds, MOVES Recordings. The follow up to 2022 single, ‘Foolish’ (reaching over 1.3 mil streams), ‘Angel’ is a seemingly euphoric slice of R&B.

Natanya’s stunning silken vocals are layered upon nostalgic, glossy chords, reminiscent of Stevie Wonder, sparkling synths and futuristic percussion that mirrors the likes of ‘Provider’ by Frank Ocean, as she reflects candidly on the duality of deep infatuation versus fear of abandonment. Presenting itself as a saturated, bright ode to a lover, beneath the surface, the lyrics detail an anxious attachment, with a dark obsession over love and its departure.

Speaking on ‘Angel’, Natanya says: “I wrote “Angel” in two parts. The first began on a flight back from DC, after I felt I’d fallen for someone who showed me something new, but was not completely present when I needed them most. I kept singing the tune of the chorus as I fell asleep on the plane, [and] rushed to my piano to write the rest of the song as I landed. It’s got a sadder meaning than its sonic presentation, though. I wrote it as an introspective ballad first, in production, we decided to up the tempo. I’m exploring the juxtaposition between infatuation and that obsessive fear of abandonment; I want to show how the two can coexist in front of the shape of an insecure young woman who hasn’t yet developed a sense of self or boundaries – so she clings to the first sign of understanding she sees, even if it’s no good for her.”

Natanya recently supported R&B superstar girlgroup FLO in Manchester and London after hitting 1+million streams with self-released single ‘Foolish’ (2022). Standing out from the crowd with her refreshing take on alternative R&B and her striking visual aesthetic, she has gained tastemaker support and has a grown a dedicated fan base and online community via Instagram, her recent ascent on TikTok and her newsletter. Natanya’s forthcoming gigs at The Great Escape, Lower Third, and We Out Here are also a testament to her beautifully crafted sound and live show, proving she has laid the foundations for a bright future the rising star is truly set to transcend. Canadian-born singer/songwriter MIRANDA JOAN‘s latest single, ‘I’m Good’ is where pop meets alt R&B in perfect harmony .

She confides on the release, “I wrote this song on the heels of a year that kicked my ass. It was a time when my mind, body and spirit had suffered, long and slow and I was looking for a place of peace where I could rest. Standing in the midst of the wreckage of that year, all I could see at the time was the damage, and so I wrote this song to remind myself of what still was; of the love that remained. It looked different now, but there was still so much there.”

Miranda Joan has found success sharing the stage with high profile artists including Andy Grammar, Lorde, Shawn Mendes and more. She has received acclaim from the likes of Consequence, NPR and LADYGUNN to name a few.
