HIGH NELSON continues his prodigious rise in 2022 with his third release ‘Ribbon In The Sky’, a contemporary and laid back summer heater which shows he aspose the same matter of fact and grown lyrics that he’s become well known for.
Talking on his influences, in his own words, Nelson explains, “My upbringing plays a part in the constant push and pull between right and wrong. There are many contradictions in the way I was raised by my family and the way I learned to survive outside of my household in the Bronx; these concepts live within my music.”
Being raised in the Bronx no doubt influenced High Nelson’s sound. His New York state of mind combined with rich Caribbean roots have organically fused together to create a perfect mesh of raw and authentic rap style, with a touch of easy going swagger.
‘Ribbon In The Sky’ shows High Nelson in his element, rapping effortlessly over an eclectic and beautifully produced instrumental. The artist provides a fresh viewpoint, rapping grown bars about making the correct decision in life, show Nelson as a man who has learnt from his past mistakes, matured from them and is intent on giving solid advice to a younger generation of listeners.
With ‘Ribbon In The Sky’’ follow up on his other impressive singles ‘Sunday’ and ‘Young Blood’. Check out the official video for single below…
Almost a year since his guest feature on Dreamville rapper Lute’s record “Myself”, North Carolina’s R&B newcomer DEVN shares the official Cinecerly-directed music video for his new single, ‘Wild’. Produced by Arnold Obonyo, the song is about being wildly in love, and romantically obsessed with someone. The video plays out over the track’s subdued instrumentals, complimented by tinted lighting, and capped by an unexpected twist.
Speaking of the seductive production, DEVN says: “I wanted to capture that feeling on this record. I was inspired by patterns that I observed in relationships, whether that be my own or someone else’s. We all experience that moment of obsession and I wanted to play with that idea. We must acknowledge the fact that relationships have highs and lows, and realize that the romantically obsessive parts are passing moments, and grow with our partners past that. The video depicts what happens when we don’t get past those unhealthy feelings.”
‘Wild’ will serve as one of three new songs on the deluxe version of DEVN’s St. Luke St. EP, set to release 9th September via Soulspazm. For now, check out the video for the single below…
Birmingham’s best kept secret JAYDONCLOVER graces the blog with a lyric video for her new single, ‘but my sister’, produced by long-time collaborator and fellow 0121 resident dylantheinfamous, and with a guest feature from Bel Cobain.
Blending R&B with lo-fi hip hop, ‘but my sister’ is a hazy summer song that evokes a perfumed boudoir, where Jaydon’s sisters attempt to dissuade her from lovers that they feel are beneath her, despite her insistence that looks aren’t everything. In her own words:
“Oftentimes I run my crushes past my sisters because I know they’ll always be honest, but most times they’re a little too honest! ‘but my sister’ is about the relationships I, and many others have with their sisters; we all just want the best for each other and if it’s not the best we will let you know. After having those sisterly chats with Bel over wine and cocktails, I knew she was the sister for this feature.”
Jaydon has previously collaborated with the likes of BXKS, Jadu Jadu, phil, Black Josh & Danny Sanchez, and supported by the likes of Clash, DIY, Dummy, Trench, BBC Radio 1Xtra and KCRW.
Rising Northern rapper ATO (pronounced: atu) follows his 2021 Side A EP with the second chapter to the story – ‘Side B’ released last Friday (29th July) via MCMXCV.
Featuring recent singles ‘COLD’ and ‘COURTS’, featuring Jay Bahd, and new unheard singles ‘nu balance’, ‘Straight Light’ and ‘outro’, this highly personal body of work was predominantly written in ATO’s bedroom. Always looking to tell his story both visually and sonically, dropping alongside the EP today is the video for ‘nu balance’ that sees a documentary style snapshot into the life of ATO from the other side of the lens.
Speaking on the EP, ATO says:
“In the time of making SIDE B, I was feeling the fragility of the world around me and found myself more committed to pushing through different feelings and emotions. The project is so desperate to find answers that the honesty is admittedly impulsive and naive at times. I feel that as a result, the vulnerable sides collide with the more resilient moments and give a more holistic reflection on the themes of love, mental health, masculinity, coming of age and pride explored.
Whilst SIDE A marks the birth of what now feels like my sound, I believe SIDE B is more refined than any of my previous projects. The wide range of production influences from stevexcooper, Jonathon Ng and singular balance, inspired me to take steps beyond my comfort zone and experiment more with melody and freestyle than I have done in the past.”
