Doechii Drops ‘She/Her/Black B*tch’ EP

DOECHII‘s first EP for Top Dawg Entertainment / Capitol Records “she / her / black bitch,” includes production from Kal Banx, Hit-Boy, Bankroll Got It and Devin Malik, and is Executive Produced by Anthony ‘Top Dawg’ Tiffith and Anthony “Moosa” Tiffith Jr.

The project cements the Tampa native as a distinct voice whose versatile talents range from quick-fire bars to seductive singing. On she / her / black bitch, Doechii outlines different layers of her life experience: from villainous to confident to soft and sad, and to overall proving that she matters.

“Many times I’ve been referred to as a “bitch” as a way to gaslight me out of certain spaces, something I think many people can relate to in one way or another,” says Doechii. “Lots of people will call you various names for doing something differently.

“So I decided to take ownership of the ‘black bitch’ and title my EP she/ her/ black bitch and reclaim that motherf***ing power,” Doechii continues.” So if you’ve ever been put down for being yourself, just remember you’re powerful and unapologetic- these songs are for you.”

In 2022 the Doechii came out swinging, chosen as an XXL Freshman and tapped as an ‘Artist to Watch’ in Rolling Stone, NPR, Vulture, Complex, Uproxx, Pigeons and Planes, FADER, and more. Doechii performed on both The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and on the mainstage on the BET Awards. She was also chosen as the RADAR US Cover Artist at Spotify; the VEVO DSCVR Artist for June; the BET Artist of the Month; MTV’s Push Artist for July; and Billboard crowned her both ‘Artist of the Month’ and a ‘Queer Game-Changer.’ Doechii’s record “Persuasive” also made Obama’s Summer playlist.

Doechii has dominated since the release of her unwaveringly original EPs—2020’s Oh the Places You’’ll Go, featuring the viral smash “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake,” and 2021’s BRA-LESS. This new release continues a hot streak for Doechii following the brazen “Bitch I’m Nice” the rebellious “Crazy” and the seductive “Persuasive” (which SZA later jumped on).

Song of the Day: Lil 5i5 – Cassie Marin

Los Angeles-based vocalist, producer and multi-instrumentalist CASSIE MARIN‘s single, ‘Lil 5i5’ is the final release from her much-anticipated album, also titled ‘Lil 5i5’, out from last Friday (12th August.)

‘Lil 5i5,’ was the first song Cassie wrote for the project and the one that would inspire the trajectory of the rest of the album. The song is a perfect encapsulation of the album, showcasing Cassie’s trademark saccharine vocals and infectious, glittery synth-pop production.

Cassie elaborates on the title track: “While writing ‘Lil 5i5’ I got to this place where I was more forgiving of my inherited and learned limiting beliefs. I was no longer beating myself up about them and I decided to have fun shedding all of this stuff that did not belong with my identity and values. I allowed myself to just let go and be honest, but also not take myself too seriously and have fun. I hope the listeners are able to feel that for themselves when they hear it.”

Constantly exploring new musical and visual dimensions, Cassie Marin has emerged as an avant-garde luminary in the left-of-center pop space. Her upcoming album, Lil 5i5, which will be out on August 12th, is a dynamic 19-track album that shows off Cassie ever-evolving musicality. Pairing the rhythms of dance music with emotive melodies and meaningful lyricism, Lil 5i5 sees Cassie at her strongest and most vulnerable yet. “I started pursuing music as a career because of what music did and still does for me; it saves me every day,” she says. “I want my music to be there for anyone and everyone who needs it the way that music was there for me.”

ATO Returns With EP ‘Side B’ + Video For ‘Nu Balance’.

Rising Northern rapper ATO (pronounced: atu) follows his 2021 Side A EP with the second chapter to the story – ‘Side B’ released last Friday (29th July) via MCMXCV.

Featuring recent singles ‘COLD’ and ‘COURTS’, featuring Jay Bahd, and new unheard singles ‘nu balance’, ‘Straight Light’ and ‘outro’, this highly personal body of work was predominantly written in ATO’s bedroom. Always looking to tell his story both visually and sonically, dropping alongside the EP today is the video for ‘nu balance’ that sees a documentary style snapshot into the life of ATO from the other side of the lens.

Speaking on the EP, ATO says:

“In the time of making SIDE B, I was feeling the fragility of the world around me and found myself more committed to pushing through different feelings and emotions. The project is so desperate to find answers that the honesty is admittedly impulsive and naive at times. I feel that as a result, the vulnerable sides collide with the more resilient moments and give a more holistic reflection on the themes of love, mental health, masculinity, coming of age and pride explored.

Whilst SIDE A marks the birth of what now feels like my sound, I believe SIDE B is more refined than any of my previous projects. The wide range of production influences from stevexcooper, Jonathon Ng and singular balance, inspired me to take steps beyond my comfort zone and experiment more with melody and freestyle than I have done in the past.”
