Song of the Day: Devotion – Midnight Mystery Club

MIDNIGHT MYSTERY CLUB (MMC) broke the bank on their latest single, ‘Devotion’. With no budget, no ads, it’s a song that hits hard and begs for grace.

After emptying the ashes of the remaining budget, MMC have decided to release music anyways. Burning through the last nickel with nothing left to relying on than their dedicated fans and supporters.

Following the wake of artists like Duke Dumont, Kiesza, and Disclosure, ‘Devotion’ is a throwback to the early 90s dance floor. Lit in neon and pulsating light with a powerful hook that surprises with a gut-punch of emotion. After the almost anthemic intro the track breakdown into an emotional deep dive of falling short in love and the desperate need for forgiveness.

On the surface ‘Devotion’ feels like a snapback in time with hard hitting 909 snares evoking memories of strobe lights and underground warehouse parties. Then the drop pulls you back, unapologetically into something softer, melodic, and almost tender. It’s bright electricity on the surface until you hear the brokenness of the first line “My feelings of devotion are fleeting emotions from hot springs to deep oceans in a day”. It’s about setting out to conquer the world and ending up stranded in a ditch. Where the best of intentions are often met with the realities of weakness that gives birth to humility and surrender.

The plea “If I break your heart can you amend it, heal it with your scares”, overflowing with remorse that recognizes that expectations of greatness may only be forecasting shortfalls. The hope in the silver lining is that scars heal stronger than new skin and that broken bones are never break in the same place twice.
Before the depth of what’s been presented settles in you’re back to the groove and the glue that holds this dance track together. With a solid hook that is slapping the walls while the hefty weight of emotions echo in the distance.

In an oddly serendipitous way, MMC had hoped to release this song with a shiny campaign focused on blowing it up right out of the gate, but like the best of intentions they’ve been sidelined to replying solely on the kindness of goodwill of those who believe in this project and who resonate with dreamers who just love music and sharing what is crafted in love. Those who long for something nostalgic but causes the soul to feel something new. That resonates truth in a way that causes us to question life’s meaning and our own place as humans within it.

Midnight Mystery Club are winners of the Independent Music Awards electronic/ dance Producers of the Year. Their music has been featured by the brands Zara, Gap, and Tommy Hilfiger amongst others. Their previous releases have been featured on many Ibiza classic compilations including Cafe Mambo Sunsets, Cafe del Mar, and Joe Morris’ Shade of Summer. Song of the Day: Lady – Deb Fan

Hong Kong-raised and Los Angeles-based artist and producer DEB FAN‘s single, ‘Lady’, is an intricate alt-r&b track which emerges from Deb’s recent pilgrimage to Hong Kong—her first visit in over three years—which reconnected her with the vibrant yet overwhelming pulse of her hometown, prompting a deep reflection of the complexities of modern femininity from her perspective as a Taiwanese immigrant living in the US. Co-produced alongside Max He, ‘Lady’ blends the live instrumentation of 90s R&B and the visual soundscapes of impressionist-era classical music, reclaiming themes of rebirth and challenging stereotypes at the intersection of technology, tradition and femininity.

In the accompanying music video (directed by Breanna Lynn), viewers will see that ‘Lady’ is set against the backdrop of a traditional tea party following Qing Ming Jie (清明節, or Tomb-Sweeping Day), a Chinese festival which blends mourning and remembrance. The visual artfully navigates the concept of techno-orientalism, challenging reductive stereotypes with its narrative and sound. Deb’s exploration of this theme questions the outdated portrayals of Asian cultures as both futuristic and culturally stagnant. The full-female cast subverts the clichéd image of the Asian female cyborg, blending high-tech elements with traditional symbols to stake their claim on their own identity.

In ‘Lady,’ Deb Fan shares that beyond defiance, her freedom of choice in defining her identity is what matters most: “There’s some beauty in made-up rules. King of my world with none to lose.” The song is a bold statement of self-empowerment, reclaiming narratives and defying stereotypes in a world that often seeks to define them for us.

Deb Fan has earned praise from tastemakers at Billboard, Lyrical Lemonade, MTV, Luna Collective, Ones to Watch, That Good Sh*t, and Gen Direct to name a few, as well as Spotify Editorial Playlists – All New Indie, Ethereal, Outliers, .ORG, Poses, high-rise, Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds: R&B, Fresh Finds: Indie, Mood., Radar: Hong Kong, Simmering, +852 Rising as well as over 30 New Music Friday playlists including a top 15 on USA NMF for her last release “9AM IN LONDON”. Deb also covered R&B Rising on Tidal and is set to be a featured Tidal Rising Artist for 2024. In 2023, she went on her debut tour supporting Hojean, and will play the KOHAI showcase in June 2024.

‘Lady’ is the first single released from Deb’s forthcoming sophomore EP ‘Kowloon Demos’. Why not check out the video for single below…

Darius Martin is ready to set summer ablaze with single, ‘Fill My Cup’

Los Angeles based artist DARIUS MARTIN‘s new single, ‘Fill My Cup’, celebrates afrobeats and its culture with enticing percussion, euphoric riffs and vivid lyrics that transports into a romantic sonic fantasy.

Paired with a vibrant visualizer that captures Darius Martin and a room full of friends letting loose and dancing to ‘Fill My Cup’, the visuals are equally as celebratory as the track itself. ‘Fill My Cup’ is that song to kickstart the summer with explorative energy and sensual sonics.

On the track Darius adds, “Wizkid, Tems, and Omah Lay are some of my favorite Afrobeat artists right now. This genre is so important, because it’s a part of something much bigger than just music – it’s an entire movement happening right in front of our eyes! I feel that music should represent positivity as much as possible and when I listen to Afrobeats that’s what I see portrayed most. “Fill My Cup” isn’t about alcohol or anything that can harm you; it’s about love and filling your cup up with God, knowledge, understanding, peace, love, and everything positive! I wanted to make a feel good song you can spend summer nights driving around to.”

Darius Martin got his start in the American Southwest where he grew up in cities among the likes of El Paso, Texas and Alamogordo, New Mexico. He went on to move to Los Angeles where he got his degree from the acclaimed Los Angeles Film Institute. He has received acclaim from Earmilk, Lyrical Lemonade, Allhiphop and ThisisRNB.
