Star Song: It’s Over Now – Kin4Life

Ki4Life Money Brings Trouble

Today’s song is It’s Over Now by female rap duo KIN4LIFE. The track is coming from their latest album, Money Brings Trouble, released in August under their label, Noriq Records.

Now these girls have been featured on NEW LEASE MUSIC twice (with tracks Goes Up with DJ CELLBLOCK and Never Stop with LIQUOR STORE BANDIT and PALEFACE JUNKIES).Now this time they got their own spot and now it’s time to find out a little more about these hot properties…

Born and raised in Mt Vernon, New York (a town renowned for its contribution to hip hop in the 80’s and 90’s) lifetime friends Nor and IQ decided to put their hometown back on the hip hop map with their KELLIS/NEPTUNES-esque beats – and at that point, they never look back! Launching their record label in 2002, they waste no time in releasing the album KIN4LIFE Volume.1 and two EPs, Rock Star and I Love Kin4Life. Success soon followed when the video to their hit single, Make Up Girl, was on the Click List Countdown on MTV’s logo for 11 weeks and was nominated for The Click List’s Top Ten Videos of 2009.

These female emcees- who collaborated with DJ JAZZY JEFF, LIL FLIP and BLACK ICE–headlined the GQ Magazine New York Nightlife Award Show as well as Pride celebration in New York, Atlanta and Philadelphia. Best of all, they were named Group of the Year by HipHop.com 2010 Readers Poll.

Without a shadow of a doubt they deserve the hype – just listen to It’s Over Now. Their raw wordplay coupled with their signature beats just shows that female rappers are not dead in the hip hop game.

If you’re feeling It’s Over Now, head over to iTunes where you can check the rest of the tracks on the album Money Brings Troubles.

Long Island rapper KALI MAC is more than ready to show his worth in the hip hop game – to his haters (and put the island on the map – his words!) – through his latest mixtape, The Underdog 2, released earlier this month.

This 13 track production features the beat-swinging Hello, the perfect introduction to what this upriser is made of. It gets better with super smooth track Smoke Sum’n where his slow-motion, doped up raps speeds up at a switch of a light. This laid back/sped up raps continues (coupled with determined lyrics) in another equally super smooth angelic Before I Die– #mustlisten. The Underdog 2, hypes up with the electrifying track All We Got and returns to the smooth, old school/kick-off-your-shoes-and-relax-your-feet beats with the track Last Breath.

With this mixtape, KALI MAC shows that he’s no underdog – but that’s just my opinion. What you think? Well check out The Underdog 2 right here.

Star Song: Just Lose – Zeno The Ruler

Zeno the ruler

Today’s song is Just Lose by Brooklyn-born rapper ZENO THE RULER. Track is coming from her mixtape #FuckDatDoe released in August.

Hailing TUPAC, LAUREN HILL and OUTKAST as her biggest influence, ZENO THE RULER – formerly known as Xplo-sev- started her music career at 15. Her laid-back flow and clever, thought-provoking and (at times) I-don’t-give-a-f*** wordplay earned her record deals with indie labels Ironfist Ent. & Money Hunters LLC in Queens NY. She went on to feature on a number of mixtapes, including American Idol hosted by DJ Snakeeyes, Sin City by Big City Productions hosted by DJ Kay Slay and 5 Deadly Venoms hosted by DJ Pimpsun. In the height of summer, she released her single  Don’t Do It, which received raving reviews across the net –no doubt her mixtape #FuckDatDoe will continue to fuel the success.

Just have a listen to Just Lose – as you get to witness this hip-hopper’s laid back raps that effortlessly cruise across the silky smooth and well-produced production – CHECK IT!

If you’re feeling Just Lose, it’s worth checking out the mixtape here – because this is one HOT rapper!

It’s good to have KING DICE O and his long-time collaborator DICE CANNON back here on NEW LEASE MUSIC. These guys were featured with tracks Drive (produced by TW$) and the loved up Something to Tell and the announcement of the long-awaited mixtape The Life Vol.1 back in August.

Now it’s finally here and I have the pleasure of reviewing this mixtape –these guys are not afraid to mix (at times) atmospheric, spaced out hip hop with a little old time soul, acid jazz and reggae– and they definitely not afraid of delivering their innovative raps with straight up, truth-need-to-be-told lyrics.

Tracks The Art of Life, My Soul, Move Forward and My Story feature that spaced out hip hop where these rappers deliver first class spoken word freestyling of obstacles that life presents. The Life Vol. 1 is just like a chocolate sundae – as you dig deeper it gets sweeter. Still featuring the hard-hitting lyrics, track Story of Sam, nicely switches the tone of the mixtape with its easy gliding grooves. The lyrics lighten up in the SLUM VILLAGE-esque Lounge Music and old school funk/spaced with reggae infused Swagg vs. Class.

The Life Vol.1 ends on a high with Struggle of Structure. Sampled from INCOGNITO’s track Deep Waters, these guys raps just oozes into the acid jazz infused production – this one is a must listen

Now I’m not just saying this for the sake of it, but this mixtape definitely deserves the hype, as these guys definitely worked hard to perfect their on-point fusion of hip hop, acid jazz, and soul with a touch of reggae. The fact the they mix hip hop with all these genres is at least a little intriguing  – so quench your curiosity  and head right here to check out the mixtape.
