Song of the Day: Cologne – Kat Deal

North London singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist KAT DEAL first burst unto the scene in late 2016 with her critically acclaimed debut single ‘Staring Back At Me’, which was supported by Clash Magazine, BBC Radio 2, Spotify, The 405, Record Of The Day, BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing, among others. Now she’s here, stealing NEW LEASE MUSIC’s Song of the Day spot with the slamming R&B jam ‘Cologne’, the first single from her forthcoming debut EP, which is set to be released in February 2019.

Produced by fast-rising Turkish beatsmith and musician Baker Aaron, who has previously worked with the likes of Nick Brewer, Kadeem Tyrell and Naomi Scott, ‘Cologne’ is an infectious and energetic offering, backed by lush instrumentation and clever musicianship, from the smooth bass guitar play to the catchy synth keys to the clever beat switch in the bridge. KAT DEAL holds these all together perfectly, with her commanding vocal display, glorious melodies and lyrical offering.

With a well-versed musical pedigree as a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and arranger that has seen her tour the world, playing for Robbie Williams, Felix Jaehn, Eliza And The Bear and Jodie Abacus, among others, KAT DEAL is excited to take center stage with her own music, which can be described as modern alternative R&B-Pop with a 90s slant, and is defined by her use of lush 80s synths, 90s inspired melodies, honest and relatable lyricism, and her unmistakably powerful voice.

New Track: Think We’re Fine – Sub Blue (ft Manga Saint Hilare)

NEW LEASE MUSIC regular and favourite SUB BLUE hooks up with his favourite MC, Manga Saint Hilare and brings something a little different to the table with brand new single ‘Think We’re Fine.

The promising soul newcomer exchanges his melancholic take on soulful R&B for a mid-tempo combo of hip-hop/R&B. SUB BLUE‘s vocal instrument injects a summery nineties vibe (think Usher), whereas Saint Hilare, vibrantly spits over the laid back bars.

Speaking of his latest release, SUB BLUE says: “Think We’re Fine’ is about how we live our lives carefree; spending money, doing whatever it is we want – without worrying about consequence or seeming not to. This is often glorified publicly making it so easy to bask in the glory of it. But behind all that, we are all fighting our own battles that not everyone knows about.

For the artwork, I used an image of Mac Miller, who I felt perfectly personified the emotion of the record to me. I am a big fan of his music but I think that tragedy, like many others, reflects the duality of celebrated recklessness and internal pain vs external perceptions.”

‘Think We’re Fine’ is the lead single from his forthcoming project, ‘Wilfully Blind’.

Song of the Day: Blinding – J Appiah (ft. Ruby Wood)

East London singer/songwriter J APPIAH, drops his latest single, ‘Blinding’ which gives is a frank examination of the musician’s interior anxieties with his developing career.

The record also acts as a cautionary tale and a creative expression of the mental labyrinths an artist passes through just trying to stay human in an industry that peddles idols and products. Reflecting his apprehension, ‘Blinding’ fuses a trace of Hip-Hop, shades of blues and gospel emanating from his soulful vocal delivery, beautifully assisted by Submotion Orchestra’s Ruby Wood.

Further explaining his inspiration behind his latest offering’, J APPIAH says, “‘Blinding’ is about my desire to be well-known as an artist but also my apprehension with regards to the pitfalls of it. It’s about people judging you for who they think you are before they’ve even met you. It’s also about being seduced by the idea of popularity. I think today there are many ways you can become well-known, everyone seems to want their 15 minutes of fame”.

The Hackney native has received strong support from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, 4 Music, Complex, BBC 6 Music, Clash Magazine, MTV Base, Dummy Magazine and The Line of Best Fit recently, while his last project ‘Travelight’ garnered rave reviews and strong acclaim from fans and the industry alike, and it’s anyone’s guess where this inimitable new artist will go next.

New Track: Liar – Luke Friend

You might remember LUKE FRIEND as the teenage rising star that finished third on the X-Factor in 2013, but the now 22-year old Devon singer and songwriter is finally coming into his own as a bonafide musician with his brand new single titled ‘LIAR’.

Released via ex Warner Music Vice President Kieron Donoghue’s indie label Humble Angel Records, ‘Liar’ is the first official single from Friend, since 2016’s ‘Take On The World’ and his UK top 40 charting ‘Hole In My Heart’, before that.

Led by his powerful signature vocals and gripping raspy tones, ‘Liar’ is a soulful bass-heavy offering with an exquisite UK Garage-esque undertone, which sees Friend finally coming to terms with a lying partner and breaking free from the relationship. The track is further held together, by a thumping bassline, engrossing storytelling and an explosive chorus that will compel you to sing along.
