Song of the Day: Summer Lovin’ – D’Still

Following the success of his recent UK Garage collaboration ‘Bag Down’, D’STIL returns to his R&B roots with his new single ‘Summer Lovin’.

The Birmingham born singer-songwriter/producer is back doing what he does best with this fun, feel-good love song that marks the beginning of Summer 2020. Reminiscent of late 90s/early noughties R&B, ‘Summer Lovin’ boasts an infectious guitar hook, soulful vocals and playful romantic lyrics. The feel-good vibes don’t stop there as it is accompanied by a heartwarming home-made music video which celebrates the togetherness (albeit in lockdown) we have all felt during the past couple of months. Shot by fans, friends and family during lockdown, the sun-drenched video seems to echo the mood of the nation perfectly as it portrays us Brits who are determined to still enjoy their summer while adhering to social-distancing rules.

With this release, D’Stil hopes to capture the nation’s spirit at a time where mental-resilience, solidarity and the feeling of togetherness have been most needed. Adding some more context to the release, D’Stil explains:

“I’ve been shielding indoors the whole-time during lockdown and the one thing I miss is the feeling of Summer. So, it feels right to be putting out the track I enjoyed writing and recording the most! It’s a Summer tonic with hints of hope, and a warm light at the end of this tunnel we’re all in.”

Since moving to London from Birmingham in 2016, D’Stil has collaborated with various London rappers and singers, with such releases supported by BBC Introducing, BBC London, Rinse FM, RWD, Wordplay and Reprezent. After an exciting 2019 for Red Side Records (which he co-owns), including supporting Artful Dodger, D’Stil set his sets on a highly anticipated second EP to follow his debut, 2019’s ‘By Your Side’.

Song of the Day: FWU – Asya

Premiering with Robert Bruce on Capital Xtra as his ‘First Play in the UK’, rising R&B singer ASYA (pronounced Us-yaa) is making her mark on the music industry with a strong introduction to her sound in the form of ‘FWU’. With an accompanying music video, the single is taken from her debut 5 track EP ‘ Love Me Till I’m Me Again’, taking inspiration for real life events that people can resonate with.

‘FWU’ along with the whole EP, was recorded and produced by Patrick at HotMoneyStudios in London, although Asya is originally from Cambridge, she currently resides in Derby where she is pursuing her studies in graphic design. Singing has always been her main passion, from posting covers on Instagram, she found viral success after her videos started getting reposted on Instagram.

Following on from her debut single ‘Come Up’ and following single ‘Right One’, which both feature on the ‘Love Me Till I’m Me Again’ EP, she has accumulated 70k+ streams on Spotify, which helped to drive Aysa to record more and inspired her to work on a collection of songs. Taking inspiration from the likes of Jhene Aiko and Dej Loaf, ‘FWU’ is a contemporary RnB jam showcasing her beautiful voice and dulcet tones.

Marking a perfect introduction to the music game, Asya, is just at the start of what is proving to be a promising career, check out the visuals for ‘FWU’ along with ‘Love Me Till I’m Me Again’ out now on all DSP’s.

Song of the Day: Down For Me – Kass

Making a very summery entry on NEW LEASE MUSIC is artist KASS with single, ‘Down For Me’.

Fused with noughties -style R&B and a heavy modern bassline, that gives the bouncing track an extra lick, ‘Down For Me’ could be described as an anthem for all the ride-or-die chicks out there, boasting infectious hooks for the significant other.

The Ontario-bred singer and songwriter came under the radar in 2017, with single ‘Drunk Textin’ that took on a new and rejuvenated sound that would later on shape his career as an artist today. The single received over 100k plays on Spotify, solidifying Kass’ music career. He followed his debut with dreamy EP, ‘We Hours’, in 2018, riddled with Kass’ airy melody and distorted futuristic notes, created by an unorthodox stutter step cadence, spelled the story of an ardent love.

Expect more music from this guy, whether it’s pop, R&B with trap or dancehall / afrobeats influenced material.

Song of the Day: Complete (Remix) – Teeah (ft. Ice Prince)

TEEAH latest single, ‘Complete’, sees the East London singer and songwriter collaborating once again with London-based producer Delirious (Tinie Tempah, Lady Leshurr, and Stylo G), after they both worked together on Teeah’s previous singles, ‘Zengeh’, ‘Save Me’ and ‘So Good’.

The single features BET Award winning and MOBO Award nominated Nigerian rap star Ice Prince, who comes along for the slow-burning R&B ride, with Teeah taking a completely different musical direction from the Afrobeats and Afrofusion vibe on ‘Zengeh’, while still showcasing her sultry soulful underpinnings.

Speaking about the inspiration for ‘Complete’, Teeah says, “We’ve all had that love for someone that makes you feel whole, and you’ll do almost anything to have that feeling around the clock, no matter where you are or what else is going on. They know that you complete them and you know that they complete you. ‘Complete’ reflects the classic conflict in my mind, between finding real love and ‘industry’ love, and the fight to hold on to what’s real. The song is also about how you complete each other in far more ways than just sexually, how the intimacy isn’t just sex, it’s more ‘complete’ than that”.

Taken from her highly anticipated forthcoming debut EP, which is due for release later this year, ‘Complete’ follows Teeah’s well-received single ‘Zengeh’ featuring BET Hip Hop Award winner and Ghanaian superstar Sarkodie. The Afrofusion joint was championed by Complex, GRM Daily, Capital Xtra, Amor Magazine, Colourful Radio, and Fame Magazine.

Song of the Day: The One – Efya (ft. Tiwa Savage)

Ghanaian soulstress EFYA calls upon renowned artist Tiwa Savage to create a beautifully, elegant masterpiece, taking shape of her second release of the year, ‘The One’. The sun-soaked single finds Efya at her effortlessly, enchanting best, teaming up with producer Blaq Jerzee for a romance tinged single.

Efya has never been one to stay in her lane; a singer, actress and humanitarian, she strives always to be the best version of herself whilst helping others. Blending soul, kwaito, afrobeats, pop and r&b, she often collaborates with other artists from different countries such as Mr Eazi and Wizkid.

Since bursting onto the music scene with her powerful songs, she has won seven Ghana Music Awards, two City People Awards, a Best Female nomination at the 2014 MTV African Music Awards and an Artist Of The Decade nomination at the 2018 VGMAs. Sarkodie, another of Ghana’s leading lights, loves her, as does Diplo, whose Major Lazer jammed onstage with the star at Accra’s Sandbox in 2019.
