EP Review: The MissTape – DeanKelly

I don’t usually don’t do reviews on Mondays, but I had to drop this set entitled ‘The MissTape’, coming all the way from Nigeria through newcomer, DEANKELLY.

In a nutshell, ‘The MissTape’ is a love note where the singer/songwriter and producer declare his love for a special lady he had an eye on for a while, desperately hoping that she responds favourably to his declaration.

From the get-go, the EP presents infectious and vivacious hooks, that’s inspired by his Nigerian heritage, with a subtle backdrop which (to me) gives off a R&B pop vibe, taking influence from his idol, Chris Brown.

DEANKELLY strategically uses a smooth and seductive rhythms of the Motherland to achieve   that across the broad appeal.

EP Review: Brown Eyed Soul Vol.1 – Cherri V

Since the release of single ‘Leave Me Be’ last year, I was eagerly waiting for CHERRI V to drop her EP, ‘Brown Eyed Soul Vol 1’…

…And finally it’s here! As featured in the aforementioned single, the eight-track set boasts the presence of reggae/dub heavy(ish) bass with lucid flow of modern R&B, before switching up to a 90s-inspired slow jam with a slight lick of gospel, through ‘Snapchat Mistress’.

The collection then filters to a faultless piano-led performance through, ‘Situationship’ where you experience and undoubtedly appreciate the true beauty and purity of this London songbird’s well-poised vocals.

Featuring guest vocalists, Sincerely Wilson – who duets with CHERRI V in ‘Situationship’ – and the legendary singer Terri Walker, ‘Brown Eyed Soul Vol 1’ is definitely worth the lengthy wait. Not the one to pass up; check it out below…

Must Listens: (it was REALLY hard to decide) Leave Me Be, Situationship, Swimming

Song of the Day: Know Your Worth – 91′ Thompson

91′ THOMPSON‘s latest track well deserves a place on NEW LEASE MUSIC’s Song of Day hotspot for its ambient combo of hip-hop and R&B, which works perfectly in unison with Thompson’s slick flow – who tells all the ladies out there (in around about way) to know their worth.

New Music Video: Bagging Up Music – Fliptrix

Hot off the heels of the scorching Joe Corfield produced single ‘It’s Like That’, FLIPTRIX is back with a different flavour for new track ‘Bagging Up Music’, the second release from his forthcoming project ‘Inexhale’. This Chemo produced banger deviates from the usual boom bap sound we are used to hearing from FLIPTRIX, bringing in together haunting melodies and skippy hi-hats allowing the fierce emcee to do what he does best.

With FLIPTRIX performing his new works live as well as guest appearances from Ramson Badbonez, Strange U, Jazz T & Molotov this is sure to be a brilliant night as we usher in a brand new masterpiece into his already stellar back catalogue. This event will give fans the a chance to pick up a copy of the album before anyone else as the official release date is the 24th August.

New Music Video: Feel – Yukon Era

Hailing from Auckland NZ, four-piece post-punk outfit YUKON ERA  unveiled the video for their recently released single ‘Feel’.

“Feel is a song that touches on personal issues within my life,” explains vocalist Christian Dimick about the fast-paced but sharp number, “feeling absent from others as well as myself, along with feeling crushed by the weight of people’s expectations of me.”

The striking visuals directed by up and coming directors and photographer Taylor Mansfield and DOP Jake Munro are a visual representation of what happens when you keep things bottled up, and in the band’s own words: “the lead character tries to get involved in social situations, while his inner demons continue to eat away at him.”

Carving out a name for themselves within the local and international post-punk music scenes as the youngest band to perform at Australia’s most iconic festival St Jerome’s Laneway, as well as creating the Auckland’s coolest all-ages festival AGEOLD, the boys have extensively toured NZ as headliners, as well as notching up opening slots for big international acts including Mac Demarco, Japandroids, Viet Cong and METZ. Having recently completed a 15 date NZ/AUS tour, selling out four shows in NZ in support of their latest single ‘Tongue’, which reached number three on the NZ Alternative charts, while their first two EPs garnered attention and praised from the likes of Noisey, Tone Deaf, Impose Magazine, Sniffers, and TheWireless.

Making their mark on the international music scene, with recent performances including this year’s Great Escape festival, YUKON ERA are aiming high, with the release of the striking visuals for ‘Feel’, and their upcoming debut album slot for Autumn 2018, it’s clear that the young band is set to make their mark on the international music scene…
