Interview with: Sophie Longshaw

SOPHIE LONGSHAW is well on her way to becoming one of NEW LEASE MUSIC’s new favourites. Not only the flame-haired songstress bagged of herself the Music Video of the Week title for latest single ‘Hold You’ – for two consecutive weeks – her previous effort, ‘In the Morning’ was also featured on NEW LEASE MUSIC’S Top Ten Songs of 2016. I think it’s about time we find out more about this star-on-a-very-steady-rise.

NLM: Hey how you doing? Thanks for taking part in an interview with NEW LEASE MUSIC

SL: Hey! Not too bad thank you, I can’t believe Summer is here. Thanks for having me!

NLM: First of all, I wanted ask you about your latest single ‘Hold You’ – which was the most popular track on NEW LEASE MUSIC back in March – what was the public perception of the single beyond the blog?

SL: Yeah it did incredibly well. I think people were surprised to hear something that wasn’t indie-folk and a little bit different to my other tracks. It’s got a real punch to it and it’s the track I get the most messages and comments about!

NLM: Your single ‘In the Morning’ was ranked #8 on NEW LEASE MUSIC’s Top Ten Songs of 2016. Have a generated other accolades elsewhere? Please share!

SL: That’s nuts! The video for it premiered on Gigwise and we were No.1 trending for over a week. I’ve had the most amazing messages where fans have told me they really connected with the song and it helped them through difficult times in their life. For me, knowing my music can help someone is an accolade for me.

NLM: You’ve cranked up quite an impressive discography! What’s your favourite track to date and why?

SL: Definitely ‘Let’s Go To The Beach’! When I first started writing it, it was a private letter to myself to get through a tough time and now it’s my most listened to track on Spotify! I love playing it live, I’ve seen people slow-dancing to it and the love you feel in the room at that moment is unreal.

NLM: How would you describe your sound to potential fans?

SL: I guess you’d say soulful indie-folk with a modern twist.

NLM: If you were to collaborate with just ONE chart-topping artist of today, who would it be and why?

SL: She’s not exactly chart-topping but I absolutely ADORE her… and that person is Lianne La Havas. She is so so so talented. I don’t know anyone else who can hold an audience like she can. What a woman.

NLM: If you had three wishes to change the music industry today, what would they be?

SL: *Creating quality music takes time and it’s a shame that unless you’re selling millions of albums you just can’t make a living so I’d say higher rates for streaming and YouTube views. No-one wants to pay for music anymore but unfortunately we can’t make music all our lives for nothing.

* EQUALITY FOR MEN AND WOMEN!!! More women in higher jobs with better pay – Vanessa Knight is a prime example. She mentored me at the start of all of this and I think she is just fantastic…. she runs her own label, has managed and helped many artists and I think we need more women like her. It hasn’t been an easy road for her but slowly but surely we are paving the way to equality.

* Unfortunately to get anywhere these days you need the image. I’d want press to change completely. Image isn’t everything and I am so sick and tired of seeing polished photoshopped artists all over magazines and the internet. Critiques of female artists often refer to their appearance as well as their musical ability which is ludicrous!

NLM: So what plans you have for 2017? Any upcoming gigs or album?

SL: No plans for an album as of yet, but we’ve definitely got a few singles in the pipeline… watch this space…

NLM: How can potential fans reach you?

SL: If you want to have a little listen to my tracks you can search “Sophie Longshaw” into Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Soundcloud and YouTube.

If you wanna keep up with what I’m up to, you can find me on the usual social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram).

NLM:  Finally, If music didn’t exist, what would you do?

We’d probably have turned into some mutant zombies by now if music didn’t exist. What a dull world that would be! If I wasn’t writing songs I’d be writing anything and everything!

New Music Video: Julia – Bella Loka

Following the release of music video for single, ‘Go Down’, Tea and David Boothby – otherwise known as BELLA LOKA – shows no sign of slowing down and churns out another video for bittersweet single entitled ‘Julia’, release in conjunction with their album, ‘The Light, The Mud & The Dark’ on 28th April.

The four-minute offering documents a complicated relationship between mother, son, and daughter-in-law. Featuring cello from guest musician Mark O’Connor, the song was produced by guitarist David Boothby and mixed by Rob Cass & Pearse MacIntyre at Abbey Road Studios.

Tea Boothby’s touching video was partly filmed at the Alton Towers theme park resort along with  glimpses of video footage of David as a child….so it’s time to watch the video for heart-wrenching single ‘Julia’…and if it did pull your heartstrings, it’s worth sampling their album here.

New Music Video: Go Down – Bella Loka

BELLA LOKA unleashed their brand-new music video for ‘Go Down’, the lead track from the forthcoming debut album, ‘The Light, The Mud & The Dark’, set to be released via DEFDISCO on 28th April 2017.

Recorded at Abbey Road Studios with in-house producers Rob Cass & Pearse MacIntyre, ‘Go Down’ contrasts ethereal, seductive vocals with a pumping monster-hook chorus and filtered, broken guitars and synths.

The sinister video was produced, directed and edited by singer/songwriter Tea Boothby, whose artistic vision extends to creating all of BELLA LOKA‘s music videos, artwork, and live visuals.

‘Go Down’ will be an instant gratification download with pre-orders of the album available from yesterday. There’s also the opportunity to explore the upcoming album through an interactive choose-your-own-adventure game on YouTube called ‘Colin: The Chicken & The Egg’, where you get to decide the fate of the characters Colin and The Blue Miner as they seek to survive the night, save the town, and avoid one of many unfortunate demises!

But before you head off for the game, have a sneak peek of the video.

‘Hold You’ is the follow-up to a series up heart-tugging singles, including ‘In The Morning’, ranked #8 on NEW LEASE MUSIC’s Top Ten Songs of 2016 list.

New Track: Hold You – Sophie Longshaw

As a follow-up to her ’emotive and stunning’ debut single releases in 2016 – which include ‘In The Morning’, ranked #8 on NEW LEASE MUSIC’s Top Ten Songs of 2016 list, 20-year-old singer-songwriter SOPHIE LONGSHAW returns with ‘Hold You’, a beautiful and soulful acoustic electronic track recorded last summer.

The London-based student’s amazing voice attracted attention last autumn when her melancholic cover of Muse’s ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ crashed Gigwise. After signing to TWIN, her debut AA single ‘In The Morning’ and ‘Let’s Go To The Beach’ became Editors Picks and gained very positive reviews from many indie playlists and ezines.

Produced by TWIN founder and BAFTA nominated composer/producer Chris Mann, Sophie’s unique stripped back and emotional sound is built around her vocals. Influenced by a range of artists such as Noah and the Whale, Lianne la Havas, Elbow and Lucy Rose her downtempo blend of indie and pop has been compared to Birdy, Lorde and Adele.

Go on, have a listen.

New Music Video: Rise Up – Bella Loka

BELLA LOKA have been busy behind the cameras, as they released another visual to mystical/uplifting single, Rise Up, released last month via iTunes.

Tea Boothby describes the latest effort as, “a love story between the day and the night, the light and the dark. Having become separated ‘in the beginning’ the light and the dark are irresistibly drawn back together, with seemingly opposing chess pieces depicting how love can appear as a battle, until it’s won.”

As part of the production of the video, Tea stood motionless against the iconic London skyline on Primrose Hill for 5 hours from dawn as the sun came up to film time-lapse footage of herself against the rolling clouds and shifting shadows.

Take a few minutes out and watch the video for Rise Up.

Music Video: Well Done – Bella Loka

well-done-bella-loka

Husband and wife team BELLA LOKA return with a kaleidoscopic music video to double A-single Well Done, released last month.

Produced by singer/songwriter Tea Boothby, the three-and-a-half-minute production reflects the duo’s visual representation of the mental disorientation they experienced upon moving to London from their hometown of Bristol in order to further their music career.

The song describes the virtual wilderness Tea & David found themselves in after deciding to move on from their Bristol-based indie-rock band and re-invent as a Camden-based electronic alt-pop duo recording with in-house producers Rob Cass & Pearse MacIntyre at Abbey Road Studios.

Despite its traumatic origins the song is relentlessly upbeat, with singer Tea determined to “turn my pain into a song” and choosing to listen to the voice that says, “Well done, you’ve made it this far… you’re gonna make it out.”

You gonna need your sunglasses for this one…check the video for Well Done.

Song of the Day: In The Morning – Sophie Longshaw

Sophie Longshaw In the Morning

Today’s song comes from the adorable freckled redhead SOPHIE LONGSHAW. Fresh to the music scene, the London-based songstress released two original tracks under international music agency/record label DEFDISCO (UK/Dallas) in collaboration with Chris Mann’s Twin Records, which includes the stunningly emotive, In The Morning.

With such delicately soulful vocals, this 20-year-old clearly has what it takes. After leaving BBC’s The Voice, she recorded a heart wrenching acoustic cover of Muse’s Supermassive Black Hole was premiered on Gigwise…so if you can spare five minutes, check it out – but before you head off, I highly recommend you to stick around and listen to In The Morning.

New Music Video: We are Young – Bella Loka

bella loka video clip

Exactly a week after appearing with the mystical visual to single, Honey B, indie-pop duo BELLA LOKA are back with another fun-pack video to new single, We Are Young.

The four-minute production is “a short sharp slap in the face and a kiss on both cheeks to the music industry”, says singer/songwriter and video director Tea Boothby, before adding, “just like me!” The song is a mildly venomous, deeply sarcastic f*&k you to the “so-called tastemakers” who sit and tell you that you have “everything but time.” A defiant call that “we’ll sing until our time has come”, We Are Young is a challenge to keep going, never give up, and refuse to allow anyone to tell you that you are too young or too old to achieve something.

Produced and directed by Tea Boothby, the black and white visual was filmed on location around BELLA LOKA’s hometown of Camden Town, London, including scenes filmed on and under the bridges at Regent’s Canal and in the famous Stables market.

For other scenes, the pair asked friends and family to film their young children dancing to the song and to send their footage for use in the video, and the result include scenes filmed in places as far-flung as Australia. The video contrasts the creative and free-spirited nature of children when left to their own devices with the soul-destroying and barren constraints of what’s left for young struggling artists trying to be heard.

So you know what to do – hit the play button and unleash your inner child.
