Song of the Day: No Limit – Hannah V (ft. Shystie and Pepper Rose)

Celebrating boldness and individuality, ‘No Limit’ is a 6-track testament to the fearless and their pursuit to break barriers, and with the lead single of the same name featuring UK Rap great Shystie, the power combination can’t help but set the unstoppable tone of this EP.

The lyric video is representative of the feminine strength on this record. Pastel hues delicately swirl into a watercolour backdrop as the bold, courageous lyrics stand with power on the screen

Having written, produced and played for artists including Stormzy, Rihanna, Jessie J and scoring a Top 10 album in JP Cooper’s ‘Raised Under Grey Skies’, HANNAH V is a music pioneer. Her determination and desire to always navigate to success irrespective of gender, ethnicity or class has remained her driving force and within her latest release, it is exactly that which she captures.

Rooted in friendship, the music is a by-product of teamwork, fierce resolution and the talent within her circle. Premiered by DJ Target at 1Xtra, lead single ‘No Limit’ features Shystie and Pepper Rose and is anthemic in its charm with a valiant hook and the infectious, quick firing delivery of rap. Within the other 5 records that make up the EP, Misha B, Cherri V, Ama Schreyer, Nicky Brown and Mike Ellison join HANNAH V on the journey and it’s packed to the brim with soul, depth, meaning and instrumental heaven. Think of it as a road trip, with all of your friends and different discussions happening along the way, emotions pouring out at varied pace, some getting soulful and deep whilst ten minutes later you’re all singing together with the windows down. Hannah V captures it perfectly on this EP, only on this trip, there’s ‘No Limit’ as to where the road will take you and how fast you need to go, just as long as you continue to break down barriers and keep it moving….

New Track: DBT (Remix) – Lioness (ft. Queenie, Stush, Shystie, Lady Leshurr, Little Simz)

LIONESS has just dropped her ‘DBT’ Remix and it is one of the most socially significant and impactful records, arguably since Bashy released ‘Black Boys’. Receiving a wave of support and praise from her peers like JME, P Money, Clara Amfo and Funk Butcher, LIONESS takes a dignified, powerful and stealthy approach as she tackles colourism, marginalisation and sexism head on.

The stereotypes and insults that come with having a dark skin tone AND being a woman are not only raised but catapulted forward in this passionate, energetic and very real account, as they were in her original DBT freestyle. Alongside an incredible line up of respected black women and exceptionally talented emcees; Queenie, Stush, Shystie, Lady Leshurr & Little Simz, the remix, produced by grime lord Prince Rapid is a heavy hitting, energy laden vibe by all accounts but lyrically it is a power anthem that should not only be heard, but listened to, and listened to closely. But are we hearing it?

The response via social media and urban music platforms like MOBO, The Hype Magazine and Nation of Billions has seen an outpouring of support, praise and community for these incredible females that have gone against the grain, spoken out and empowered themselves, and those listening, with their strength and honesty. A small pocket of the grime scene is hearing it and standing proud of what is being achieved here, yet the wider media seems like it is not yet listening, proving one of the most important points that are being raised in the record.

This is some hard-hitting stuff…LISTEN to ‘DBT (Remix)’

New Track: Without You – GNGR

‘Without You’ is the captivating debut single from exciting new British singer and songwriter GNGR. Produced by Sampl, who has worked with the likes of Skepta, Ms Banks and Shystie, the slow-building atmospheric R&B offering is just a teaser of what you can expect from GNGR in 2018, and the first taste of her forthcoming debut project, which will be released at the end of the year.

For fans on H.E.R, Sabrina Claudio and Daniel Caesar, GNGR has been honing and perfecting her own unique slant on today’s alternative R&B sound, driven by raw and honest lyrics, and her amazing voice, which oozes the most soulful tones, while taking influences from R&B stalwarts such as Destiny’s Child, India Arie, Anthony Hamilton and Frank Ocean, who have all helped shaped her music.

Our first flavour of this is the exquisite ‘Without You’, which sees GNGR yearning for a love that is doomed from the start, but she just can’t seem to let go. Backed by moody keyboard arrangements, minimalist cymbals, and lush grand piano undertones, GNGR holds the record together beautifully, with an enchanting vocal performance, and confessional lyrics, that we can all relate to…
