Song of the Day: Patience – Zach Zoya (ft. Angel)

Montréal rapper/singer/songwriter ZACH ZOYA collaborates with UK’s R&B king Angel on ‘Patience’, taken from Zach’s latest ‘Spectrum’ EP, a collection of energetic hip-hop, Intricate Rap and emotive R&B songs, showing off Zach’s versatility.

When regarding the UK R&B scene, Angel is a name that is at the forefront of those conversations, having topped the R&B charts as well as achieving a number of UK top 40’s from being a vocalist on tracks to writing them for others, he has written for the likes of Stefflon Don, Moneybagg Yo and Frank Ocean.

‘Patience’ is a mid-tempo R&B reflection on the struggle between chasing success and being present enough to enjoy the process. The official video for ‘Patience’ was filmed in Montréal and directed by Zoya’s close collaborator Le GED.

Speaking on the collaboration Zach says: ‘Patience’ is a precious song, it’s the highlight of the EP for me. It’s about the long and tough road to happiness and the paradox that comes during that chase. I talk about that in the song when I say, ‘Every time I think of joy, I lose a little’ and ‘If I keep chasing happiness I’ll never find it, I think it’s just a matter of where your head is at.’ This song is me trying to remind myself that I’m in happiness right now, living this journey.”

Album Review: 2020 DIvision – JYellowL

Irish rapper JYELLOWL jumps right down to it with his highly-anticipated debut album, ‘2020 DIvison’ and addresses the issue of having self-worth through the introductory track ‘2020’, which possesses an intimate, stripped-back setting later joined by drums, idyllic runs of piano keys and a gusty thump of the b-line.

Melodic tones (which becomes patently clear that this is JYellowL’s trademark) against a seamlessly smooth hip-hop/R&B dropback and boisterous bass, continues through the first half of the album, putting a thought-provoking spin on serious topics such as systemic and institutional racism.

‘2020 DIvision’ then ventures into the realms tropical dancehall/Afrobeats (in ‘Hypocrite’ and ‘Change’), moving onto an air of tranquil trap-hop, 90-inspired afterhours in an acoustic setting and even elements of New Jack-ish era in ‘Tunnel Vision’. Along the breadth of genres, JyellowL continues to cover a breadth of tropics, including his experience in the music industry and taking proactive steps to elevating the youth in today’s society.

From the moment I hit play on ‘2020 DIvision’, it became very clear that JYellowL is more than just a musician who is instantly recognisable through his distinctive sound and catchy flow – he’s a strong activist that isn’t afraid to tackle political and social issues that intrigues as well as disturbs him, urging his audiences to find that inner flame to do the same.

Even through his singles ‘Ozone’, ‘Jewels’, ‘Doesn’t Feel Like’, ‘Mademoiselle’
and ‘Tunnel Vision’ were all well received ahead of the album’s release, JYellowL (personally) will be now further placed as one of the most intriguing and promising artists from the Irish rap scene and perhaps beyond – and may well be look upon as a Juggernaut-like political figure among his peers with ‘2020 DIvision’.

Song of the Day: Where They At – Snotty Nose Rez Kids

Comprising of rappers/producers Yung Trybez & Young D, hip-hop duo SNOTTY NOSE REZ (SNRK) are rounding up 2020 with the release of ‘Where They At,’ their fourth collaboration with Drezus.

Recently winning the Breakout Artist, Indigenous Artist of the Year and Rap/Hip Hop Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards (WCMA’s), SNRK have been able to capitalise on what initially felt like a devastating halt to their momentum as artists due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. After their first headline U.S. tour and festival runs in Canada, U.S., Europe and Australia were cancelled or postponed, SNRK shifted towards writing for a new album, working on a series of collaborations. The album is slated for release next year.
