A Quick Chat With…Mike Body

MIKE BODY has been a regular feature on NEW LEASE MUSIC pretty much since the blog’s inception, almost 13 years ago! He has also been a regular on NLM charts over on Instagram, claiming the Music Video, Album and Song of the Week AND month title multiple times.

So it’s an absolutely pleasure to finally get the christian rapper from Baltimore in the interview seat to discuss his latest album ‘It Is Finished’, which is currently the blog’s Album of the Month. So sit back, relax and get to know this conscious rapper…

NLM: You released your album, ‘It Is Finished’ back in January. What is the public perception on the project so far?

MB: ‘It Is Finished’ has received mostly positive reviews so far. The UK has given favorable feedback about the project via different blogs. I have grown to really appreciate the support from the UK over the last 6 – 7 yrs and look forward to that appreciation continuing to grow. Also, salute to the die hards and day ones back home in the states that continue to rock with me and support me along with my latest project (It is Finished). Most of them appreciate the album’s overall theme and sound.

NLM: How would you describe the album’s sound to potential fans?

MB: I would say the sound of the album has a conscious vibe to it, accompanied by my background as a christian. It’s about an end of an era, accepting an era is over and beginning a new chapter.

NLM: What inspired you to produce the album?

MB: Events in my personal life sparked the template for the album. Also I thought about making this my last project but I still have a little more to say as an artist. I’m not done just yet.

NLM: What is/are your favourite single(s) from the album and why?

MB: Hmmmm…. I would say ‘Land of the Lost’ is a favorite because it’s very lyrically sound and I believe the emotion behind the song was captured correctly. Also the production is dope. I love the song ‘Outgrowth’ as well because of the message about growing apart from someone or even some place. Sometimes as believers we can grow apart from God and not even realize it until it’s too late.

NLM: What message would you like the listeners to take away from ‘It Is Finished?

MB: I hope it points people to God in a sincere way but not in a man in the sky type of way, but in a realistic way. The teachings of Jesus are mentioned a lot on the project but they are depicted in a sincere way. The album is about growth, change and acceptance. Accepting things you cannot change but moving on while not being afraid to change for the right reasons.

NLM: If you had to feature one mainstream artist on the album, who would it be and why?

MB: It would be Kendrick Lamar, but not solely because he’s hot right now but because of his earlier releases like ‘Hi Power’; that song made me a fan. He always brings a message with him more times than not.
Also he has a lot of spiritual undertones in his music. I can hear him on a ‘Land of the Lost’ remix for sure.

Honorable mention J.Cole, Jasmine Sullivan

NLM: So what plans do you have for the rest of 2025?

MB: I have a podcast in development and a new EP coming out soon.

NLM: How can potential fans find you?

MB: Fans can find me on the major social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter). My music is located on all major DSP’s like Apple, Spotify and Tidal etc.

NLM: Finally, any special shoutouts to those in the production of ‘It Is Finished’?

MB: I want to give a big S/O to Let That Boy Cook. He produced the entire ‘It is Finished’ project.
He’s been my main producer over the last few years and it’s been a great ride! I know I’m bias but I consider him a really good producer from the states. I’m looking forward to doing another project with his production.
Also, S/O to Jaitay who mixed and mastered the project and a big S/O to my guy Andres from Highland Records who engineered the album.

I’ll be back in the studio soon! I’m not done yet…

A Quick Chat With…Marina Massanova

It’s an absolute pleasure to introduce MARINA MASSANOVA.

Known for her quirky pop and alt-rap singles that are arguably controversial, the German-based singer/songwriter has recently released the video for single ‘Aberrations’, which is currently the blog’s Music Video of the Month. The video contains striking visuals with wonderfully bizarre hidden meanings, so I caught up with Maria to reveal all…

NLM: Hey, thank you for taking part in an interview with NEW LEASE MUSIC. How is 2024 treating you so far?

MM: Hi Tracey, it’s so nice to connect with you!

2024 kicked off in a rather sneaky way. One part of the world was plunged into darkness—remember the total solar eclipse on April 8? It really hit me then how tiny we are in the universe.

But here’s the thing: despite feeling so small, I’ve witnessed so much beauty this year—in music, art, and everything people have created. It makes me wonder if we might actually be quite unique beings among all those distant, rocky planets.

I’m here, fully alive, soaking in millions of shades of emotions every day, savoring delicious burritos, listening to Cola Rammë’s voice notes, and watching the rain fall.
2024, thank you for all of that!

NLM: You released the video for single, ‘Aberrations’, with Cola Rammë back in October. What’s the concept behind the production?

MM: Innocence and perversion—even if we hesitate to admit it, these two forces are always connected within us. Cola and I dared to express this truth openly and provocatively, challenging the minds of our listeners.
People often find the truth unsettling, especially the things they’d rather not think about for more than a fleeting moment. These are the thoughts they only entertain late at night, when no one else can guess what’s going on in their heads.

But there are no ‘bad’ thoughts. Our brains are simply processing pieces of information in strange and absurd ways—and that’s okay. It’s normal to think about forbidden things and dream bold dreams. Our minds are just testing what feels comfortable and what doesn’t. In the end, it’s what we choose to do with those thoughts that defines who we are. That final decision is what truly matters.

NLM: What inspired you to come up with the idea?

MM: It all began with a chilling nightmare experienced by my co-writer, Cola Rammë. In this dream, I was transformed into a terrifying monster relentlessly hunting him. Maybe that’s just how his inner self sees me!🤭
The nightmare itself was horrifying, but what really haunted Cola was a mysterious song that played on a loop in the background. Upon waking, he quickly captured that haunting melody, “stealing” it straight from his nightmare. That melody became the foundation of the song ‘Aberrations’.

When it came time to create the video, we couldn’t resist revisiting that unsettling dream. Aberrations isn’t just a video—it’s an invitation to step inside Cola’s nightmare. We brought to life the disturbing imagery from his dream, plunging viewers into a surreal and terrifying landscape where the line between reality and horror is beautifully blurred.

NLM: Man, you look like you were having a lot of fun in the video! During filming, were there any funny/awkward moments you would like to share?

MM: Absolutely! Picture this: a peaceful rural German village, where parents, kids, and the elderly are all enjoying a lovely day by the lake. The sun is setting, it’s warm and serene. Suddenly, Marina appears, with scary makeup, a Medusa crown, and a latex corset, diving into the water. I’d say they were definitely curious about what was going on.

Meanwhile, Cola, who had bought a bunch of dolls from a thrift shop, was all set to destroy them. But honestly, the way he did it was the most artistic destruction I’ve ever seen. Of course, he captured everything on camera for our video.

If I could tell little Marina what my future job would be, I think she’d be pretty excited!

NLM: What is the public perception of the video so far?

MM: The phrase I heard most often was, “This video is so artistic!” What’s even more exciting is that the video was selected to be showcased in the movie theatre at Berlin’s “Support Local Music” event. The creator of the event told me that the video was so captivating that he completely forgot to take the usual photos during the screening—he was absolutely absorbed in the narrative. And it didn’t stop there—many others said it was crazy and described it as a mysterious puzzle that needed to be solved. It’s truly unbelievable how many people were drawn to it!

NLM: If you had the chance to feature a famous actor or musician in the video, who would it be and why?

MM: The only thing that could make this video even more macabre would be featuring Marilyn Manson in it. I truly believe that if he had the chance to see it, he’d enjoy it too. When I was a teenager, I dreamt of marrying him, and I still feel his influence in the work I do today. He’s such an incredible artist!

NLM: Are you closing off 2024 with any of your solo work?

MM: I know a lot of people are eagerly waiting for my punkish, wild solo songs—and I’ve got three new ones! I’m keeping them under wraps while Santa’s still flying around, so he won’t be too shocked and I can get my good-girl presents. But as soon as that old grandpa heads back to the North Pole, I’ll put them into production. And oh, oh! It’s going to be something pretty wild.

NLM: What plans do you have in store for 2025?

MM: Hmm, let’s make them together. I think I’m ready to welcome new people into my music community. Right now, it’s a bit of a secret project, shared only among fearless music seekers. But I know how my beloved fans listen to my songs relentlessly, and it would be selfish to keep it all within our circle.

So why not invite some exciting new people in? Every soul brings something unique to the project. I believe music isn’t just about the artist—it’s about the whole community that grows and evolves together. Let’s do it! I’m ready to step out from my introverted side. That sounds like a plan to me!

NLM: How can potential fans find you?

MM: You can easily find me as Marina Massanova on all streaming platforms, socials, and everywhere else. I’m eager to meet you 🖤

NLM: Finally, any special shout outs to those involved in producing ‘Aberrations’ video?

There were only 3 people involved in creating the video. I filmed my scenes in Berlin with the incredibly talented videographer Nataly Dimitrieva, while Cola captured his intense shots in Newark all on his own.
When it was time to put it all together, I took on the editing, and that’s when it all came to life!

The simplicity of the team paired with the complexity and mystery of the final result is something I’m so proud of. I couldn’t be more thankful to have worked with such talented, out-of-this-world people. This experience is truly a reason to be alive on this planet!

A Quick Chat With…Richi Camarena

When I heard RICH CAMARENA‘s uniquely blissful vocals on single, ‘Promise You’, my heart immediately melted…for some reason, on the single, he reminds me of a male version of Sadè…. and for that reason alone, I had to find out more about the Mexican singer/songwriter. RC: My girlfriend was the reason behind the lyrics, she has been an incredible support and inspiration for my music. She was the one who suggested me to start making music. A Quick Chat With…Nia Chennai

I’m absolutely chuffed to have caught up with London’s emerging singer/songwriter NIA CHENNAI, who is – in my opinion – one of most exciting acts to come out of the capital’s alt-R&B scene. She released her debut album EP, ‘Diary Is A Waste of Paper’ last November which stormed straight to #8 on the NEW LEASE MUSIC’s Top Ten Albums of 2023 list. So sit back and relax and take time out to find more about this very promising songbird and her blazing project…

NLM: What inspired you to produce the EP?

NC: Making the EP I wasn’t going into the studio, thinking “oh we’re making a project”. I just went into the studio and was making songs that I loved and it came to a point where we were thinking this would be a great time to drop a project.

A Quick Chat With…MusicByMercy

MUSICBYMERCY has earned a spot in the NLM interview seat for his latest EP, ‘MichaelMyers’, which is currently the blog’s album of the month. I probed the South Florida upcoming rapper about his inspiration for producing a horror-themed project plus his plans for 2024. So are you ready to find out more about this hot lyricist? Good, let’s get to it…

NLM: Hey, thank you for taking part in an interview with NEW LEASE MUSIC. How is 2024 is treating you so far?

MBM: So far, so good. The family good. My peoples are good. New music is coming. Just staying the course. Taking one day at a time. Life never slows down and time waits for no man. It’s about embracing every moment that’s presented. It’s all about creating new memories…doper ones.

NLM: You released your EP, ‘Michael Myers EP’ back in October. What is the public perception on the project so far?

MBM: Yes sir! The public perception was well received for what it’s worth. It was an appetizer or sampler for a special occasion. Keep the fans connected.

NLM: How would you describe the EP’s sound to potential fans?

MBM: The sound is a perfect Hip Hop playlist for Halloween. It’s very eerie, very moody, very hardcore for any horrorcore rap fan. If Christopher Nolan was to make a horror film, ‘Michael Myers EP’ would be the soundtrack.

NLM: What inspired you to produce the EP based around Halloween, in particular Michael Myers?

MBM: My boy also my A&R Jorge told me I should do a project based on Michael Myers, since I am currently working on projects that represent or have the moniker ‘Michael’ since it’s my first name. So, we wanted to carry on that tradition. Michael Myers, was a perfect outlet to present darker music during Halloween. I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to provide some dope horror rap for the listeners.

NLM: What is/are your favorite single(s) from the EP and why?

MBM: My favorite song changes each time I play the EP. Haha, it can go from “The Shape”, “Scary Hours”, “Evil Vs Good”, “Death Note” or even the “The Boogeyman”. However, I keep playing “Evil Vs Good” or put it on repeat. It’s something about the beat and the transition of it from grimy to uplifting.

NLM: What message would you like the listeners to take away from your EP?

MBM: I just want them to have a great listening experience. Enjoy the beats, the skits, the bars, the storytelling. All of it. Be a hip hop fan, a rap junkie and just enjoy the music and not be a analyst about it.

NLM: If you had to feature one mainstream artist on the EP, who would it be and why?

MBM: It would have to ultimately be, Prodigy of Mobb Deep. Unfortunately, rest in peace, but P would’ve murdered every single rap song on there. He really help inspired the flow and energy on that project. However, Conway the Machine, Pusha T, and Stove God Cooks deserve honorable mentions.

NLM: So what plans do you have for the rest of 2024?

MBM: Keep doing music. Keep pushing. I got a lot of incredible music in the works and looking forward to releasing throughout the year. I am just trying to leave my footprints in the game. Stay connected and make new connections.

NLM: How can potential fans find you?

MBM: You can find me on most of the social medias under “MusicByMercy” altogether. I’m not hard to find and what you’ll find is a goldmine.

NLM: Finally, any special shoutouts to those involved in the production of ‘Michael Myers’?

MBM: Huge HUGE shoutout to my main man, SlimRock, who produced “The Shape”, “Myer’s Theme” and “Smith’s Grove Sanitarium”. He also help mixed and executive produced the project with me. I recorded the whole EP at his studio. We were on our Snoop and Dre shyt on this EP. Also shoutout to Homage, LIVIN’, KuBo, Flowers In Narnia and JQ for giving me the soundscape to scare the shit out of your stereo, haha. Yeah, it was a solid team effort across the board. Much love to my guy, Jug The iLLest for his insane featured verse.
