Song of the Day: Run – Yvon (ft Dekar)

YVON uses music as a therapeutic outlet, expressing her thoughts and feelings through creating music, she has collaborated with Dekar to give us her single ‘Run’,  a smooth RnB infused track with a hint of tropical vibes resonating from its core.

Having modelled and walked on runways for the elites of the fashion industry, representing brands such as Victoria Beckham, Maison Margiela, Matches Fashion, Selfridges and Topshop to name a few, Yvon’s main passion and focus is her musical journey. Although singing since a young age, her desire to vocalise her poetry sparked an interest in rapping, further influenced by hearing her brothers write lyrics and perform around the house.

With a ‘Free Spirited’ musical style, Yvon combines mainly RnB and Soul, with influences ranging from the greats that include Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo and Jasmine Sullivan. She has spent the last two years honing her craft in the studio and gained support from tastemaker sites such as Dazed and HighSnobiety for her stepped back performance at Sofar Sounds HQ, she has also delivered impressive performed at the likes of Keakie, UN:HURD and The Hospital Club.

Song of the Day: Slow Right Down – Jeffery James

Taken from his new EP, ‘East London’, Nashville-based singer/songwriter JEFFREY JAMES’ single, ‘Slow Right Down,’ is a pensive ballad that highlights James’ confident and inviting vocals.

Speaking of the release, The Billboard-approved singer says: “I wrote ‘Slow Right Down’ in 2019 when everything in my life was racing forward and I didn’t have time to catch my breath,” James writes. “This song became my personal mantra — a meditation — reminding myself that it’s OK to step back, look up every now and then, and just take in the moment.”

The ‘East London’ EP, released 28th February, was birthed during a month-long songwriting trip to London in early 2019. James worked with legendary engineer Geoff Swan (Charli XCX, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay) and producers Jackson Dimiglio-Wood (Shawn Mendes), Dan Weller (SikTh), and Dan McDougal (Liam Gallagher) to create a uniquely cross-Atlantic record that draws on James’ Nashville influences and combines them with the blue-eyed soul sounds that have been dominating the UK charts.

Song of the Day: They Look Just Like They Know – Michael Baker

MICHAEL BAKER‘s first release of the year, ‘They Look Just Like They Know’, is a stirring acoustic piece of delicately plucked strings, rich reverb and cinematic movements, all of which steers the listener’s attention to Baker’s tender vocals and penchant for storytelling.

As with previous single, ‘Baby Books’, the Brighton songwriter once again turns to the subject of mental health, signified by the line “the mind can be a deadly place,” which Baker sheds further light on in the quote below:

“I wrote ‘They Look Just Like They Know’ when I had moved to Brighton after spending a couple of years of living in my Van and moving around. This song is a melancholic ponder on both the comfort and discomfort of memories, and how sometimes, in the darker times, your own home can feel strange and unfamiliar. It’s the difference between feeling at home in your mind, and feeling trapped in it.”

‘They Look Just Like They Know’ also follows previous single ‘Past The Evening’, which was premiered by Clash Magazine, who described it as “a tender return, showcasing the songwriter’s deftness of touch, and his gilded use of colour.”

Previous support for Michael Baker has come from BBC 6 Music , Youtube and Spotify Tastemaker Alex Rainbird with ‘One God Damn’, The Independent with single ‘The Steady & The Stuck’, and was selected for BBC Introducing London’s Artist of the Week . Michael also supported Sarah Jarosz at Union Chapel, performed at the inaugural Black Deer Festival and completed a UK and European tour back in November 2019.
