Having the classic church background common in such a historically musical hometown, Jeff found his way to the microphone via numerous avenues. Song of the Day: Water // Chrome – Holy ’57

HOLY ’57, the moniker of London-based artist Alex Mankoo, explores the joys and tensions in his cultural identity on the grooving single ‘Water / / Chrome’.

A gently glistening intro creates a disarming and dream-like atmosphere for HOLY ’57 to deliver his poetically sculpted personal lyrics. Punchy drums and a low bass set a funk-inflected rhythm that draws from contemporary hip-hop influences, whilst rounded guitars call to mind the bittersweet productions of Vampire Weekend and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. With Indian and Greek heritage, but having grown up in the UK, Alex explores the experience of struggling with one’s cultural identity, presenting its joys, conflicts and poignancies, as he feels “torn in two by the outcome of an avalanche”.

The video for ‘Water // Chrome’ brings to focus the song’s main themes. The waves push back against him, symbolic of his own inhibitions and issues of identity.

Song of the Day: Own Thang – Spike Geez

It’s been sometime that NEW LEASE MUSIC staple SPIKE GEEZ stole the blog’s limelight…but he’s here now, hogging today’s hotspot with this SERIOUSLY dope track, ‘Own Thang’. In the accompanied video the slick emcee from Philadelphia stresses that he follows his own path – nobody else’s!

‘Own Thang’ is from his latest EP, ‘After Dark’ – check it out here.

But before you head off, watch the video for ‘Own Thang’ – enjoy!

Song of the Day: Augustine – Kalahara

The first piece of music the pair (KALAHARA) wrote together, ‘Augustine’ is a more stripped back and emotive affair this time. The sparse production gives the vocal room to breathe evoking a sense of release and letting go. The music develops around a percussive swung conga leading you into Lydia Kaye’s incredible haunting vocal. Her beautiful multi layered harmonies glide over the deep rising bass-line, sonically enforcing the repeating motif ‘I lost myself’ building the track into a piece of dreamy downtempo alt-pop becoming mesmerising with the subtle yet addictive chorus.

The EP comes with remixes from some of the underground’s finest in the form of remixes from Bandulu gang’s very own Boofy & Wu Yen ( Hi5Ghost). Both take the original and flip it into straight up fire taking elements of the vocal but then dropping into their trademark dutty 808’s, snares and soundsystem shaking bass. Finishing off with a glitchy remix from newcomer Art|Thft the EP is complete.

The original is also accompanied by an absolutely stunning video from the incredibly talented filmmaker Craig Murray (Mogwai, Snow Ghost, Houndstooth etc) starring his own wife, who pairs the delicate original with a brilliant short film. Using his trademark elements of stop motion animation and film, taking its influence from a mutual love of ‘komorebi’ , space and the universe and everything in between it is the final piece of the puzzle to complete the release.
