Song of the Day: I Don’t Wanna Wake Up – Marie Dahlstrom (ft. James Vickery)

Danish/London based artist MARIE DAHLSTORM‘s single ‘I Don’t Wanna Wake Up’, featuring South London soul singer James Vickery, is one stunning soulful slow-burner. Pairing soft synth lines with a groove-laden rhythm section, ‘I Don’t Wanna Wake Up’ tells a story of desire.

Speaking on the collaboration, Marie said: “I’ve been a fan of James’ voice for a while. James and I had a session at mine, and this song just came about so naturally, we just started humming melodies over the chord progression and not long into the session we had the line ‘I don’t wanna wake up’. I produced this song myself and I remember leaving the production for a while before actually committing to finishing it and that’s when I got my friend Liam Joseph to jump on some bass and Qmillion to get involved for the mixing.”

Brought up on some of soul and R&B’s greats; recalling the likes of Edwyn Collins, Womack & Womack and Gloria Gaynor being on regular rotation in her family home in Roskilde, Dahlstrom also cites the discoveries of Dwele, Musiq Soulchild, SWV, Dire Straits, Lucy Pearl, Erykah Badu, Kirk Franklin and Fleetwood Mac in her teenage years as key points of inspiration in her musical upbringing.

‘I Don’t Wanna Wake Up’ is taken from the BBC 1Xtra-backed songstress’ debut album, ‘Like Sand’, out now via JFH Records. Smooth out your hump day and wrap your ears around this stunning track below…

Charles Shares Future-Soul Single ‘Sundance Kid’

North London artist CHARLES finds inspiration in those special connections made with other people. As previously explored in singles ‘Darker Shade Of Green’ and ‘Red.Green.Gold’, relationships are the cornerstone of Charles’ songwriting, as you’ll find with his newest future-soul single ‘Sundance Kid’ featuring vocalist Sharky.

Speaking of the track, Charles says: “I wrote ‘Sundance Kid’ the best part of 2 years ago with my mate Sharky. I fell down a youtube rabbit hole of old bank robbers (don’t ask) and stumbled upon Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Inspired by their story, we began to write about my relationship between me and an ex girlfriend back in the day. It was a love affair, combined with bad behaviour and a lust for causing trouble. With both knowing we would never be more than just friends for obvious reasons. Playful melodies accompanied with fat bass lines tell the story beautifully. Produced by Mathias Boman, Sundance Kid is an anthem for couples whether that be romantically or just you and ya best mate frolicking about in summer fucking shit up.”

Watch Re.decay’s video For Single, ‘Sun In The Morning’

Owen Ross and Emanuel Bender – aka hip-hop duo RE.DECAY– have created the surreal music video for debut single, ‘Sun In The Morning (feat. ADH, Mawcom X, Sedric Perry)’ via SPRINGSTOFF.  The single is lifted from their upcoming EP, ‘Down Long Enough’ which will be released on 19 June.

Re.decay reveal a little more about the magic that went into creating the music video: “Sun In The Morning was filmed and conceived by Alex Forge, a wildly talented French film maker. Sedric shot his part in Owen’s studio in Berlin while ADH and Mawcom X filmed their parts in NYC and Accra respectively. Then Alex edited it in Spain and uploaded it over a full day on WiFi that was struggling with the number of quarantined people on it. Like all of our endeavours it involved an international group of creative people overcoming obstacles to make something great.”
