K-Riz brings optimism into 2024 with video for latest track, ‘Come & Go’

K-RIZ returns with a new video for ‘Come & Go’ that illuminates the artist’s infectious optimism. The hip-hop and R&B-infused single, which appears on the Birthday Cake Records-released album, ‘One Way Ticket’, is an affirmation to overcome negative thoughts, move through hard times with ease, and embrace the lessons that can be learned from adversity.

On the track, the multi-talented Alberta artist expresses the liberating power of having grace and letting go of the past, while using forward movement as an encouragement to listeners. “Tough times are temporary; they’re teaching lessons,” says K-Riz. “Problems come and go as long as you’re always working towards moving forward. When you look at the storms from that perspective, you can see them for what they are – here today, gone tomorrow – and weather them with more resilience.”

Featuring many of K-Riz’s past collaborators (horns from Octavio N. Santos, violin from Tina Sol, and Deppisch on the flute), swirling arrangements complement producer Theo’s spacious beats. Emerging Calgary filmmaker Gbohunmi lends his directorial talents, taking viewers on a tour through elevated spaces and mindsets, moving from one transitory place to the next, from train stations to rooftops, culminating in K The Chosen rapping contemplative verses as he walks through Calgary at night. The video also features cameos from rappers Tea Fannie and La Tytan.

The release of ‘Come & Go’ follows praise for K-Riz’s latest album, One Way Ticket, from various outlets. RANGE Magazine included the album on its list of the Top 50 Canadian Albums of 2023, and Bandcamp featured the LP as a New & Notable album upon its release, while Complex Canada included singles ‘Middle Finger U’ and ‘Inside Your Love’ among its Best New Canadian Tracks. OUT TODAY: Listen To Justine Tyrell’s Single, ‘Drive’

With its effortless blend of an addictive compilation of synths and rhythms, JUSTINE TYRELL‘s brand new single, ‘Drive’ details the unfolding of a less-than-perfect relationship.

Timothonius and Matthew Zoeteman’s flawlessly modern production provide an immediately infectious smooth and sensual beat, a perfect platform for Tyrell’s spellbound vocal capabilities.

Speaking of her newest offering, Justin explains: “This song captures the moments of what is imminently the last drive taken with a flame, blaring with silences and the realization that the love has slipped away. The blurring of street lights and the tension of quiet gazes, fill the spaces of all of the words that are going unsaid. Intimately personal and inspired by the dark sonics of the production soundscape, Drive tells a story of how sometimes the loneliest places we go, are together.”

Justine Tyrell has earned nominations for Singer of the Year, Solo Artist of the Year, Media Personality of the Year (Obsidian Awards), and has gone on to be named one of Branded Magazine’s ‘Game Changers, in her City of Calgary, Alberta’. She has been featured on CBC Radio, received nods from Stingray Music, featured in Metro and went on to see exciting success with the release of her recently released singles, ‘Worthy’, ‘Radar’, and ‘My Name’.

Arlo Maverick Shares Gripping Visuals For Single Hashtag

Western Canadian Music Award-nominated artist, ARLO MAVERICK shares his video/short film for the track, ‘Hashtag’, a song of protest about racial profiling and police brutality that will appear on his forthcoming EP, ‘Soul Merchant’, out in spring of 2021.

The video arrives amidst Black History Month to continue the conversation around the issues that Black people continue to face nearly a year after the global uprising in response to the murder of George Floyd.

Co-directed and co-edited by Maverick, the video’s concept draws from the real-life stories of Ahmaud Arbery, a 25-year-old Black man who was fatally shot while jogging; Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old Black boy who was playing with a toy gun and fatally shot; and others who were killed by police or while in police custody. In one lacerating verse, Maverick calls out the difference between how white men and minorities are treated by police.

With vocalist Riwo (of Melafrique) belting the song’s chorus, “I don’t want to be a hashtag one day,” and Black people being shown in everyday circumstances getting killed at random, Maverick suggests the prevalence of the bias-based policing that leads to violence. “When you see the chalk outlines of bodies and all of the hashtags come up at the end of the video, I wanted the viewer to be overwhelmed by the number of names on the screen. For them to think, ‘How many more Black lives need to be taken for changes to happen?’” said Maverick. “Since the video was filmed, more people have been killed. Before the end of the year, it’s going to happen again.”

The title, ‘Hashtag,’ is also a reference to fair-weather activism on social media and the use of hashtags to bring attention to the Black lives lost at the hands of police. “In using hashtags for something as serious as Black death you sort of make light of it,” said Maverick. “I think social media activism can be really powerful, but I also think it can desensitize. People get concerned, demand changes, these hashtags circulate, but without enough real action nothing will change. There’s still not enough accountability in the justice system.”
