R&B Girl Group BLK Release Single ‘Girls’ From EP + Video

BLK, the first R&B girl group from the city of Toronto in recent history, are solidifying themselves within the international music scene on their single ‘Girls’. Introducing melodic tempos paired with a lush range of R&B vocals and hip-hop flows, ‘Girls’ is a female empowerment anthem positioned to be the soundtrack for every woman dealing with a significant other who needs to get kicked to the curb.

Produced by Pops (Drake, Machine Gun Kelly) & Lowner, BLK sings unapologetically over rich guitar chords & rhythmic 808’s “lost yourself a bad b*tch, lost yourself a marriage, lost yourself a Queen.”

These three solo artists—each of whom write, produce, and perform—combine their initials and colourful styles. This universally-minded outfit is spreading some authentic BLK Girl Magic.

All three artists have Canadian roots. Bexk, a fashion design student from Toronto’s East End, is of Bajan heritage. “I’m the savage,” she admits—employing her nickname as something of an alter-ego, “I fight for our best interests at all times, and encourage others to speak up.” Korahjay is a self-described free spirit from Montreal who comes from a Jamaican family. Her moniker, combining words from scripture and a family name, means power. Lilac X, whose exponent represents self-empowerment, considers herself a citizen of the world.

Song of the Day: I Don’t Trust You – K-Riz

On the heels of his critically hailed The Room EP, Edmonton hip-hop/R&B artist K-RIZ getting ready to drop his sophomore full-length album, ‘Peace & Love’, due out on September 24….and first up from the project is single, ‘I Don’t Trust You.’

About an unfaithful lover, K-Riz confronts an ex-flame’s betrayal and deception, setting his melodic raps to a tender R&B-pop bounce assisted by production from J. Deppisch and Grammy-nominated LordQuest. Juggled into his wordplay, he recounts the good with the bad.

“When you fall for someone, it’s hard to trust what your intuition may be telling you,” K-Riz says of the song. “You miss the red flags. You want the person you’re with to be who you think they are, even if they’re someone completely different than what you set them up to be. When trust has been broken, that’s always going to be in the back of your mind. If you can’t trust, you can’t fully love the one you’re with, even though you want to try.”

Originally set for release in early 2020, K-Riz put Peace & Love on hold once the pandemic hit, choosing to delay the project until the time was right. Then things took a turn for the worse when the rapper was in a near-fatal car accident in the summer of 2020, an event that inspired The Room EP. That effort drew attention from Complex, Exclaim, CBC’s The Block, CBC’s The Strombo Show, and peaked at the #2 spot on Canadian college radio’s National Hip Hop Chart.

With Peace & Love, K-Riz goes back in the narrative arc of his life, recounting how he found the other side of a gutting heartbreak and series of upheavals. Not a breakup album per se, but a record that captures his personal breakthrough as a result of the fallout.

K-Riz’s stunning sophomore, Peace & Love, is slated for release on September 24…but for now, have a listen to its first release below (highly recommended)…

Snotty Nose Rez Kids Bounces Back With Track, ‘Uncle Rico’ + Video

SNOTTY NOSE REZ KIDS (SNRK) have experienced a lot of highs and lows from 2019 until now. From releasing their album TRAPLINE, playing 100 shows in 2019, winning and receiving nominations for various awards, the guys were riding high until the pandemic hit. Plans for touring and an EP were derailed. As the end to live music restrictions came back in sight, SNRK feels invigorated.

Everyone has that uncle in the family that reminisces about the glory days, talks about himself in a big way and often boasts about what he used to be, coulda been or what he thinks he is. SNRK’s brand new track, ‘Uncle Rico,’ is about that inner ego that everyone holds within them. The accompanying music video (directed by Sterling Larose) makes subtle references to the Napoleon Dynamite character in which ‘Uncle Rico’ takes its name from.
