OUT TODAY: Remy Nova takes us on a trippy ride with single ‘Oh Deed (On Gummy Weed)’

Inspired by a harrowing personal experience, REMY NOVA‘s single, ‘Oh Deed (On Gummy Weed)’ – out today (25th July) across all good music platforms – documents the moment when an edible experimentation goes left field – and I mean really left field!

After giving up Xanax to manage anxiety, Remy (aka acclaimed songwriter/composer Jeremy Little), decided to trial some cannabis gummies before a rehearsal with a musical hero in Los Angeles. The euphoric sensation from popping the gummies quickly resulted in a very draaaaawwwwn ooooouuuuut journey home via a Uber ride, which was further exacerbated by several attempts to enter his apartment.

To capture the eventful experience, Remy blended blurry synths with echoic soulful hooks – imagine being in a very small room with Frank Ocean, Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz and Tame Impala all performing, creating a harmonious discord. Remy penned a touch of existential humour to the sonic soundscape to guide us to the point where reality swirls into surrealism. The track’s hypnotic vibe reflects Remy’s own intentions behind the music. “I would love for the audience to go on a journey with me—deep, deep down into the inner chambers of the mind,” he says. “I want them to feel like they’re flying through the ether untethered by physical laws.”

‘Oh Deed (On Gummy Weed)’ is out today, 25th July, from various music platforms. So why not lose yourself and go on a cosmic trip…

Ross Flora shares ‘Cornerstone’ – a song displaying power of faith, community, and the unwavering love

From an early age, ROSS FLORA showed strong signs of becoming a musical prodigy. His father cultivated his musical journey when he overheard Ross – who was just 12 at the time – performing along a Van Halen CD— he signed Ross up for guitar lessons that very day! Throughout his teenage years, Ross went on to perform at various venues and festivals. At 19, he joined The Kings on tour in Roanoke, Virginia, as a guitarist and vocalist.

The big decision of moving from his hometown Virginia to Nashville to take his music career to another level, had paid off fruitfully For Ross. His gutsy soulful fusion of Country and Folk along with compelling storytelling has earned him a dedicated following. Ross’ debut single ‘Cannonball’, released in 2002, was met with glowing reviews with fans hailing him ‘The Golden Age of Rock ’n’ Roll with a Southern Flare’. He followed up with his first EP, ‘Shoulders of Giants’, in July the same year, which landed him a feature in the Roanoke Times alongside fellow Virginian Morgan Wade as an emerging Nashville talent.

Despite his burgeoning music career, Ross felt he was at a crossroad. His latest single, ‘Cornerstone’ is a touching invitation into Ross’s life, where he felt spiritually stagnant. More importantly, ‘Cornerstone’ is a reminder to appreciate the community of people who offered that helping hand, in order to be the best version of ourselves. Song of the Day: Different Now – Pauline Andres

Born in France to a coal miner’s family, PAULINE ANDRES has captivated audiences with her sweet and smoky voice that “perfectly conveys the thoughts and observations of an old soul walking home at closing time.” Growing up near the Franco-German border in a multicultural household of Hungarian and Balkan descent, Andres was immersed in a vibrant mix of languages and traditions.

Now based in Nashville, TN, Andres initially garnered attention as an Americana singer-songwriter. However, during the lockdown, she reinvented herself as an engineer and producer, venturing into retropop and synthwave. Her first electronic release, ‘Til the End of the World’, dropped in the Fall of 2020, followed by the experimental ‘Medicine Woman’, earning her vocal comparisons to legends like Stevie Nicks and Nikki Lane.

Andres’ latest single, ‘Different Now’, marks yet another evolution in her distinctive musical journey. This upbeat and fresh pop track, infused with disco sensibilities, showcases Andres’ ability to command a song with a danceable and carefree spirit, perfectly capturing the essence of a summer anthem.

The funky and electric chorus highlights Andres’ knack for weaving pop melodies into dynamic productions. Originally penned by Andres, the track’s beat was later reshaped by her UK-based co-producer George Harris, resulting in the birth of ‘Different Now’.

She shares “‘Different Now’ is a song about reconciliation and growth. It’s a love song to begin with but is about much more than romantic relationships. It’s about emerging on the other side. It’s about seeing things differently and healing.”

Reminiscent of Sophie Ellis-Bextor, this cool 90s-tinged electro-pop anthem is luscious and catchy, yet lyrically profound and shows depth. In the vein of artists such as Caroline Rose and Angel Olsen, ‘Different Now’ stands out as the perfect pop-infused remedy from Pauline Andres.

Accompanied by an official video co-directed by Corey Simpson, ‘Different Now’ heralds a new direction for Andres in this intoxicating disco-pop track. Fans can look forward to her ambitious Fall release, ‘Final Girl’ – a tribute to classic slasher movies, co-produced by Sinclair, a fellow producer with whom Andres has collaborated on multiple Nashville Film Festival projects.

With her unique ability to blend genres and create evocative, heartfelt music, Pauline Andres continues to prove herself as an artist who defies expectations and pushes creative boundaries. ‘Different Now’ is a testament to her ever-evolving artistry and an artist with the world at her feet.

Song of the Day: My Old Friend – OUDi

Sometimes your most rewarding relationship is the one you have with yourself. Over the course of a career that’s taken her from Canada to Nashville—and from the alt-pop/industrial world to the country arena and back again—the phenomenon known as OUDi has learned that lesson all too well. And she’s sharing it on ‘My Old Friend,’ an irresistible high-drama ballad that marks her debut as a solo artist after years of sharing the spotlight.

Built on a plaintive instrumental melody and a mesmerizing clockwork rhythm, the song carries the emotional weight of a conversation you have in the mirror when there’s no one left around to hoodwink. OUDi’s compelling vocal starts off at a seductive purr as she confronts an inner solitude, she might not exactly welcome, but knows she can always count on:

Hello loneliness, can’t say I missed you/But let me tell you this, now I need you

The internal co-dependency fully acknowledged, her amazing voice opens up into a bittersweet embrace of the darkness:

Go and do that thing you do, make me feel and lose my mind/‘Cause I have nothing left to lose, you’ve been waiting all this time/I dare you come a little closer and rest your head upon my shoulder.

This isn’t just a declaration of artistic independence; it’s the story of a life. Born Chrystal Oudijk, she was out of the house and supporting herself by age 16, while pursuing her musical muse through a variety of projects. There was the five-piece alternative band The Perfect Strangers, the pop-industrial project Jakalope (for producer Dave “Rave” Ogilvie) and then—most famously—the pop-country duo Sons of Daughters (with Jimmy Thow). She was Chrystal Leigh by that point, and finding such success as a Billboard-charting, CCMA Award-nominated artist that she had even moved to Nashville from her native Vancouver. There was just one problem:

“Jimmy and I struggled as creative partners,” she divulges. “Add in alcohol, anxiety & depression and we had ourselves a real party!”

The near loss of a family member due to addiction and the confusion of the early pandemic era only deepened her dissatisfaction. When Sons of Daughters parted ways, she took two years to regroup, rethink and write her very first solo album. The release of ‘My Old Friend’ is the opening salvo in her new career—strike that, her new state of being—as OUDi. It also sounds the death knell for what she describes as an adulthood full of toxic relationships and creative compromises.

“I’ve been living in survival mode my entire life,” she reflects. “It’s only been in the past two years I’ve been training my nervous system to relax. I’m excited to finally put my stories to song, for I have a lot of them.”

The year 2024 is going to mark a real renaissance for this woman, she even directed the music video for ‘My Old Friend,’ exploiting a side talent she’s cultivated during her recent period of self-emancipation and reinvention. Her explanation for all of it is as sanguine as the song is bleak, yet equally self-aware:

“I guess it goes to show when you start to live your life authentically and true to yourself, magic really can happen.” Why not watch the video for ‘My Old Friend’ below…
