Song of the Day: Stay Focused – BLKGLD

Hailing from Croydon and of Jamaican descent, identical twins Shereen and Sophia aka BLKGLD enchant us with their beautiful and buttery vocals through their debut single, ‘Stay Focused’ out now on all major download/streaming platforms.

The single innately evokes a nostalgic feeling that transports back to the 90s with their effortless fusion of R&B and Dancehall. This irresistible number has slow wine written all over it, and the meandering baseline is mixed in with a tropical xylophone vibe.

With a musical encyclopedia that is rich with the heart and soul of R&B, the girls site Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Destiny’s Child, TLC,  Boyz 2 Men and Usher  amongst some of their biggest inspirations and influences and their sound marries this together with a contemporary twist. Crediting their seasoned soulful voices to their dad who also sang and often was likened to Nat King Cole himself, it’s no coincidence to why BLKGLD are slaying it.

Cementing their rightful place within the UK music scene and beyond, they have already received co-signs from notable names in dancehall, including Beanie Man and The Fanatix. Their soulful renditions of many classic and future hits have already gained some exciting traction, amassing millions of views across all social media platforms, leading to the duo performing alongside Migos and the late Juice Wrld last summer.

Keeping 100% focused, BLKGLD are ones to watch for 2020…check out the video for their debut below…

Song of the Day: Drinking With The Devil – Lloyd Llewellyn

Taken from his latest EP baring the same name, LLOYD LLEWELLYN‘s single, ‘Drinking With The Devil’ features a compellingly atmospheric soundscape, serving as the perfect platform for his undeniably soulful-soft rock vocal delivery.

Speaking of the release, The South Wales singer-songwriter says: ‘This song came from a place where I battle with all sorts of temptations, a lot of back and forth clouded in even more negativity but not from anyone else but myself.

During these times I realise that the battle I have is something that makes me feel alive and I have started to revel and enjoy the flirting of pushing myself to the edge. Don’t get me wrong there is a lot of struggle and darkness within those times but when I’m holding all the cards I don’t mind pouring the whiskey.’

Taking early influence from his grandfather’s love of Charles Brown and Nat King Cole, to first hearing Led Zepplin and The Doors with his Dad, Lloyd found his way to artists such as The National and Bon Iver. He has played at Boardmasters, Isle of Wight Festival, Bergenfest, Camden Rocks, Glastonbury, headlined a stage at Alternative Escape, is a regular at Sofar Sounds and, has sold out headline gigs at Notting Hill Arts Club, Hoxton Bar and Kitchen and Camden Assembly.

His first single ‘Long Way Down’ was played on BBC Wales and BBC 6, quickly followed by his second single ‘Selfish Skin’ via BBC Introducing…I have a very strong feeling that ‘Drinking With The Devil’ will gravitate even more attention from major music figures.

New Track: Stranger – Dani Darling

Following her debut feature on NEW LEASE MUSIC with music video for single, ‘2:22’ – which was named Music Video of the Month in February (see Instagram post here) –  DANI DARLING (aka Soul Galaxy Girl) makes a graceful return with her haunting yet angelic new single, ‘Stranger,’ the first release from her forthcoming EP, ‘Nocturne.’

Speaking of her latest effort, the Michigan lo-fi soul songbird said: ” ‘Stranger’ was initially the start of a jazzy musical I planned to write with a friend. The idea was to create a modern version of a jazz standard like Cole Porter or Gershwin; something Nat King Cole would sing. It started with exploring the concept of growing apart from someone you were once very close to and ‘Stranger’ was the first (and only) song I wrote for that project; it kind of took on a life of its own.It was the result of a live recording in one take.”

Released on Friday (26th April), ‘Stranger’ is now available on all digital platforms…this will make a nice start to your Monday; check it out below:
