Mixtape Review: Beats And Pieces: Volume Two – Joshua Luke Smith

JOSHUA LUKE SMITH‘s latest mixtape, ‘Beats And Pieces Volume Two’, stemmed from a difficult time when his wife and his father were in hospital – at the same time.

The result of his latest set could have been predictably dark and melancholic. Instead a soothing and comforting presence of soulful boombap runs throughout the best part of the collection, with Joshua’s lucidly smooth delivery adding some hope and optimism.

Tracks ‘Joy’ and ‘Circles’ provides another dimension to the set with intensively imitate arrangements, prompting the prospective listener to really home in and resonate with the message in each productions.

Now this guy has produced the entire mixtape under a month – he wrote the lyrics of each song in a hospital waiting room whilst being with his wife and father. Joshua gets my utmost respect as, in a time of distress, he produced a stunning collection that displays an unflappable appreciation for life.

‘Beats And Pieces, Vol.2’ should be a reminder to us all that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel…no matter how hard life gets…Check it out below…

Toms One Drops Summer-Ready Track, ‘All I Need Is You’

Following his entry on NEW LEASE MUSIC with single, ‘Hey’ (Ft. Lauren May), which is currently the blog’s Song of the Month, DJ TOM ONE is back with his latest single, ‘All I Need Is You’, featuring Georgie Wells.

Boasting perky electro dance synths, perfect for the upcoming summer months, ‘All Need Is You’ is a song about appreciating the one you love – not necessarily a significant other – but close friends and/or family who were there through the toughest times. The three-and-a-half minute piece is further uplifted by Birmingham singer Georgie Wells’ perkily soul/pop vocals.

Inspired by artists such as Calvin Harris, Jess Glyne, Clean Bandit and Klingande, ‘All I Need Is You’ was originally conceived in 2014 whilst Tom was studying music at the University of Manchester. After the song went through many transformations, in summer 2018, Georgie Wells was enlisted to provide the vocals and the track was finally completed in late last year.

So here’s your chance to check out Tom One’s single, ‘All I Need Is You’, now available on your favourite download/streaming sites.

Song of the Day: Tim Burt – Keynes Woods

KEYNES WOODS returns with single ‘Tim Burt’, the second drop from his long-awaited EP ‘Kongo Kane’, out now.

‘Tim Burt’, the signature single from the project, gives credit where credits due – Keynes shouts out to all the people it takes to put music out.

He states: “A lot of artists get props for the numbers on the board, but other areas of their game are ignored”. He uses this clever metaphor to reflect on his background as an athlete and ball-player and transfer it to music. He wants to celebrate the well-rounded trench workers that may not get as much love as the flashy one-note players.

The Toronto-based rapper has been celebrated for his experimental voice and playful aesthetics since the start of his musical career but it wasn’t until his epic performance in the COLORS box early last year where he was launched into the spotlight. Since then he has gained support from the likes of Highsnobiety, Redbull, Complex, Hypebeast and TMRW  and is fast becoming one of Toronto’s sizeable up and-comers.
