EP Review: This Is For You – Monti

Reflecting on her experiences – from a turbulent childhood, living on the streets, to being in a codependent relationship, geared by drugs and alcohol, LA-based power-pop singer MONTI takes back control and power through her debut EP, ‘This Is For You.’

Introducing a slight misty bed of  soft indie electro pop soundscapes, the tempo picks up with third effort ‘Shadow’, which gives off a big band-ish feel to the electro/pop combo, before reverting back to those floating tones. The star of the show is, no doubt, MONTI‘s powerfully soulful vocals, which is not only pleasing to the ears, but also invites the listener into her world of past hardships, enabling them to feel the pain she went through.

Although it’s autobiographical, ‘This Is For You’ serves as a source of inspiration for anyone to overcome any adversity in life. If this talented newcomer can rise above her troubles, surely so can you.

Must Listens: Cowards Caste, Echo

Song of the Day: Quiet – Grace May

Following the release of her single ‘High Tide’, taken from the album, UNION (released via Berklee’s record label: Heavy Rotation Records) GRACE MAY returns with the stunning release, ‘Quiet’.

Written after listening to Joni Mitchell’s ‘Both Sides Now’, May was inspired by the songstress and delved into old interviews where she was left in awe of Mitchell’s quote, “If you listen to the music and you see me, you’re not getting anything out of it. If you listen to that music and you see yourself… now you’re getting something out of it”.

‘Quiet’ narrates the feeling of loneliness. It’s the familiar story of not wanting to burden friends and family with your worries, so instead you struggle in silence and this feeling is reflected through the solitary instrumentation and minimalistic production. Despite its simplistic approach, the single packs a punch through the 22-year-old Canadian songbird’s passionate and heartfelt vocals.

This is one single you don’t want to miss…have a listen to Quiet, available on all download/streaming sites.

New Music Video: Spring Haze – Nicki Knightz

East Londoner NICKI KNIGHTZ has dropped some gripping visuals for latest track, ‘Spring Haze’, taken from her EP, ‘H.A.T.E’ out now.

The one-and-a-half minute production flips between two lives of the dark side that goes on in the inner city area of Hackney  – the side of Nicki the ‘misfit’ that she is now and how she lives her life and a young boy getting involved in dealing, stealing and eventually being killed. This was the harsh reality growing up for Nicki.

Over some smooth, almost neo-soul bars – a complete change to previous boisterous tracks, ‘Hate’ and ‘Mindwalk’ –   the young rapper describes the struggles faced in a low funded area, where majority of the people who live here are poor, and gives an insight into why drug dealing and violence commonly occurs in a brutal finalé.

This is some hard-hitting stuff…see for yourself…check out the video for ‘Spring Haze’ below:

New Track: Sober – Marcel

Known as a ‘national treasure’ by the press, singer-songwriter, producer and DJ MARCEL
rose to fame with Blazin Squad in 2002 after they released a cover of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony track, ‘Crossroads’ which reached number one in the UK Singles Chart. MARCEL went on to secure seven top ten hits, including ‘Flip Reverse’ and ‘Love on the Line’, before securing himself as a finalist on the 2017 hit reality TV show Love Island.

Now, in between TV fame and media commitments, MARCEL is cementing himself as an innovative artist and recently released the afro-swing hit ‘They Wanna Know’, a well-received foray into his forthcoming EP ‘Circles’ due for release later this year.

Not afraid of incorporating his most personal experiences in his songwriting, his latest offering ‘Sober’ addresses the price of fame, highlighting the side to it that people don’t see; the lows, the pressure of the media and the unwanted attention.
