Song of the Day: Wauww – Wohdee

Coming on the back of a stellar debut year in 2021, garnering strong support from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, KISS Fresh, Earmilk GRM Daily and Mixtape Madness, Up and coming Birmingham’s rapper WOHDEE returns with the catchy and infectious drill offering ‘Wauww’,the first single from her upcoming debut EP that arrives later this year.

Produced by Jacques Charles, who has also worked with Nadia Rose, Wretch 32 and Jammer, ‘Wauww’ sees Wohdee flexing her braggadocios lyrics, confident flow and intricate wordplay over the catchy drill soundscape, which shows a different layer to her artistry. For the accompanying music video, Wohdee has linked up with Leon Matthews (Stefflon Don, Fredo, Tion Wayne) for a fun visual that shows off her personality and future star power.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Wauww’, Wohdee says, “I had never made a drill song before, and I wanted to make one, but change the narrative a bit, since I’m not involved in the drill type of lifestyle lol. I remember being at my job thinking of double entendres for drill slang like ‘splash’, ‘dip’, ‘run man down’ etc… When I finished my shift, I wrote it all down and got in the studio. The video is basically just me, having fun with my mates; a good vibe zone”.

While her early freestyles caused quite the stir and highlighted her immense talent, Wohdee only started recording original music during the first lockdown – music that has since found acclaim from the likes of BBC 1Xtra, KISS Fresh and Capital Xtra. With influences from the likes of Chip, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliot and Movado, a strong penchant for rap music, and the skill and fluidity to dip between genres, Wohdee is already showing that she is one to watch for 2022.

Song of the Day: The Door – IMVN

IMVN‘s (pronounced Iman) debut offering ‘The Door’ is a down-tempo, brooding and left-field blend of R&B and electronic music, with the North West London songbird’s melodious vocals glide effortlessly throughout punctuated by harmonic layering and reverb rich moments.

Speaking on ‘The Door’, IMVN says:

“The Door is low-key. It exudes a mental state of indifference. It’s spoken from the perspectives of two people, one who doesn’t want responsibilities and lives in the moment; the other, who’s waiting to be taken seriously and not feel used by others. The Door is a conflict between two incompatible characters who haven’t yet realised it.”

Sonically influenced by the likes of Kate Bush, Mariah Carey and RY X, from a young age IMVN was encouraged by her mother to write songs during the summer holidays. It was these early moments of introspection and dedication to her creativity that she honed her ability to write honestly and relatably. Now at 21 years old and a former dance student, IMVN is most influenced by the unpredictable nature of life – with her music and visuals representing a hybrid of the world around us, ever evolving. A careful and considered artist, everything IMVN creates is done with the utmost care and thought.

Song of the Day: Good To You – Alana Sukul

ALANA SUKUL is an exciting, new-on-the-scene artist emerging from South West London. With parents hailing from the Caribbean, she has grown up surrounded by the influences from her culture that she has interpreted into her image, musical style and character, while also blending in the vibe of hip-hop culture. Although she is often perceived as a soulful R&B artist, she refuses to be identified as fitting into any single genre and instead experimenting with a variety of sounds and styles such as her current favourite, R&B-tinged funk-pop.

Throughout 2021, the 20-year-old newcomer introduced listeners to her genre-blending style with dancey pop number ‘Be Friends’ and upbeat bop ‘Closer’, both with a deeper message that can be interpreted by the listener however they wish. One thing that’s clear, Alana doesn’t write love songs, instead her lyrics reflect the wide variety of struggles that life can throw up at you, but always with a positive attitude.

This is something that you’ll hear in her first release of 2022, ‘Good To You’. It’s a heartfelt reminder to cut yourself some slack and to not crumble under the pressure, which are present right throughout our lives, but for Alana, it’s young adulthood that she’s facing right now. Throughout the song, she incorporates dancehall rhythms and luxurious pop melodies into a simmering production.

Speaking about the main motivating behind ‘Good To You’, Alana Sukul shares: “Sometimes as young adults we try to live up to certain standards and pressure, this is just a reminder to live your life the way you want to.”
