Song of the Day: Roots – IYKZ

London based Nigerian rap artist IYKZ has been releasing music independently since 2012, and has always felt that something’s been missing; a connection of some sort. The story; his story, the good the bad and the ugly. The story of his background, IYKZ’ Roots.

“The process of being comfortable in our own skin takes years, and such growth should be celebrated.” – IYKZ

IYKZ is of African decent, he’s Nigerian, patriotic and proud. Having previously collaborated with the likes of Maleek Berry and gaining millions of streams on Spotify, as well as support from tastemakers at BBC 1Xtra and KISS Fresh, IYKZ continues his upward trajectory. This single is what he feels those feelings of inner love and peace sound like. With the rich afro-inspired rap production from Ransom Beatz (Davido, Big Tobz, Runtown), IYKZ explores memories of his childhood, showing his journey much gratitude and adoration….

Why not join him on his nostalgic journey and have a listen to ‘Roots’…

EP Review: The Crusaders Of The Lost Art – Redd Tunes Productions

REDD TUNES‘ latest EP, ‘The Crusaders Of The Lost Art’, is relatively shorter than his previous projects. It shifts from the London producer’s hazy stance on the golden hip-hop/boom bap era – as featured in previous EPs – to a fresh and crisp feel, showcasing string-laden productions, against the semi-menacing b-line, where guest rappers take their turn in giving the EP a retro boom bap feel with a fierce edge.

If you’re a regular on NEW LEASE MUSIC, then there’s a chance that you’re familiar with Redd Tunes’ work..and if you dig the vibes of his past work, then you’ll definitely welcome ‘The Crusaders Of The Lost Art’ into your collection…check it out below

Song of the Day: Timeless – Oscar Jerome (ft. Lianne La Havas)

Lifted from his long-awaited debut album, ‘Breathe Deep’, released late last month, South London-based artist OSCAR JEROME‘s single ‘Timeless’ is a duet with Lianne La Havas which also includes instrumentation by friends in Ezra Collective, Sons of Kemet and Oscar’s other band, Kokoroko.

The pared-back single strip things down to the bare fundamentals, with Oscar soft-plucked guitar and vocals going back and forth with the sublime harmonies of Lianne La Havas. As the song builds, layers of lush jazz-inflected instrumentation are introduced piece by piece.

Oscar says of the track: “I wrote this song for my Dad. It’s about viewing someone you love as a constant through your whole life, not just who they are now. I was privileged enough to have the legendary Lianne La Havas jump on this tune. She made it everything I hoped for and more. She has been really good to me over the last couple of years and I appreciate her greatly.”

The single arrives off the back of 6Music-playlisted ‘Sun for Someone’ (ft Joe Armon-Jones), ‘Your Saint’ (ft Brother Portrait), ‘Give Back What U Stole From Me’ and, most recently, ‘Joy Is You’. Have a listen to ‘Timeless below…

Premiere: What You Gonna Do (Video) – Nemi

Like most indie artists during the pandemic, NEMI had to put on her thinking hat and really get creative, dodging the obstacles that the lockdown presents…and as a result, she became interested in the visual aspect of music. Despite having extremely swollen hands from her condition eczema, somehow the alt pop songstress made it happen and circled back to her earlier singles and produced a series of accompanied DIY music videos.

Now Nemi has unveiled the stunning visuals for her 2017 debut single, ‘What You Gonna Do’, which she produced with the help of Niko Pelicolo. Niko made contact with Nemi after hearing her 2019 single, ‘I Can’t Get Through To You’ on a Domino’s Pizza advert and by chance, he expressed his interest in making a film. Though the pair met under peculiar circumstances, they managed to piece together a collage-style production, which features Nemi and her closest friends who elegantly strut to the tranquil experimental pop debut, sporting the musician’s infamous orange bob.

Nemi was previously featured on NEW LEASE MUSIC with the video for single, ‘I Can’t Get Through To You’, which claimed the blog’s Music Video of the Week title five times – a record that’s yet to be broken on the blog’s charts show on Instagram.

Be sure to place Nemi on your radar, as she gets ready to release her EP…for now, press play on the video for ‘What You Gonna Do’.
