Song of the Day: Fall – The Lyonz
Formed in 2013, THE LYONZ are a Canadian music group and art collective largely focused upon hip-hop and electronic work. Consisting of Salvo (Anthony Salvo) and Norrin (Terrell McLeod Richardson), their debut album, ‘Peace Beyond The Pines’, released in 2015, led them to perform various shows in Canada and landing a spot in Montreal’s 2016 international Jazz Festival. Their musical style landscapes atmospheric dynamics, conveyed through heavily processed synthetic layers, shifting drum patterns, and the blending in of treated instruments frequently met with melancholic verses. Their unique sound is often unconventional, with arrangements established by high production values, involving extensive digital editing and mixing.
Although primarily a musical group, THe LYONZ also work with other forms of media. They have gained notoriety through their visual artwork including personalized event flyers, short videos, and merchandise. A notable example is their string of weekly flyers promoting their DJ residencies at Montréal venues.
So if you haven’t of these guys, let me introduce you to their mesmerizing latest single, ‘Fall’. Check out the video below…
Song of the Day: Cold Naan – R Choppa
The UK rap scene has never been such a hive of cultural influence as it is right now and R CHOPPA delves into his Asian heritage for the release of his latest joint, ‘Cold Naan’.
Bringing an alternative hip-hop flex to the wider mainstream, R CHOPPA delivers ‘Cold Naan’ with a carefree attitude and freestyle flows that feel almost completely created on the spot. His confidence and personality shine through in abundance as he delivers an eccentric, versatile and abstract rap record that is deep with choral chants, thumping drums and emblazoned with the vibrant sounds of India, whilst also managing to make an anthem from the subject of pizza and ‘Cold Naan’.
The record is taken from the recent release of his ‘Animal Behaviour LP’, which is a 17-track project laden with an array of influences making it a refreshing, alternative and interesting playlist that refuses to adhere to the simplicity of mainstream sounds. Blurring the conventional lines is exactly what R CHOPPA stands for whether it be with genre, lyricism or character – he’s not here to deliver a tried and tested recipe that has been here for generations but instead he finely weaves a multitude of flavour to cater to every taste with new, experimental energy.
Making his visual debut with the self-directed and idiosyncratic video, ‘Cold Naan’ is the perfect introduction to R CHOPPA. Packed with fun, character, quirk and everything that goes against the grain of the polished, mainstream, it retains clarity and is a bold statement for the rising young star….
