Song of the Day: Menace – BXKS

Hailing from Northampton via Luton, BXKS is a sonic breath of fresh air in the UK rap scene. Her astonishingly quickfire bars and a slick, sharp assurance alongside genre bending and experimental beats full of dreamy samples are all heard through her single, ‘Menace’ produced by P-rallel.

Speaking on ‘Menace’ BXKS says: “Menace is a story about me. It’s about me being aware of my abilities and doing what needs to be done to accomplish my set goal – “please don’t play me”. It’s also a rhetorical question to the listeners :). The artwork (by cocoa juice) is based on “neon genesis” the anime.”

‘Menace’ forms part of BXKS’ debut mixtape ‘Full Time Daydreamer’ released on Friday, 11th June via Marathon Artists. Including previous singles ‘Packed In’ and ‘Work Like ft. KISH!’ which were widely supported by i-D, Target, Mary Anne Hobbs, Jamz Supernova and Rinse FM (playlisted twice), ‘Full Time Daydreamer’ is an eclectic eight-track “playful playlist” crafted mainly with producers TK and P-rallel, lyrically covering everything from rap brags to being broke, all with a bouncy, deft ease to her delivery, mirroring the fun escapist world BXKS wants the tape to represent.

Song of the Day: Forgiveness – The High Breed

UK-based hip-hop collective THE HIGH BREED make their return to the scene with single “Forgiveness”, their first release of 2021. The track showcases the collective’s unique hip-hop style, effortlessly blending conscious, relatable lyricism with hypnotic, trap-infused production.

‘Forgiveness’ starts with an organ-inspired synth that instantly connects you to the song’s biblical theme, with the rolling drums and piercing hi-hats giving the song the punch it needs to deliver its weighty philosophical message.

Speaking more on the track, The High Breed say, “‘Forgiveness’ is an honest dialogue about what forgiveness truly means to the individual who has done wrong in a world full of self-denial. It is an expression and an acceptance of the ‘shadow self’, a vulnerable confession about the darker nature of our humanity and a poetic discourse on the morality of the human soul, highlighting the battle between virtue and temptation that no person throughout any age has ever been free from.”

Having gained traction with a string of releases last year, such as ‘Star Dwellers’ and ‘Meet the Gods’, and receiving support from BBC Introducing, the independent DIY collective are set to continue their momentum with single ‘Forgiveness’, now on all platforms.

3Breezy Releases Brand New Video For Track, ‘Message To Her’

Newly-signed Capitol Records hip hop/RnB artist 3BREEZY shares the video for ‘Message To Her.” The record, self-released by 3Breezy last November, already has 2,817,445 views, and overall in his short career 3Breezy has amassed nearly 25 million streams in the U.S. alone.

On ‘Message to Her,’ Breezy tells the story of a woman who’s been neglected by her lover. Alternating between the woman’s perspective and his own, Breezy offers words of encouragement that are as tender as his vocals. Inspired by a direct message he received from a fan who wanted him to sing a story she couldn’t tell on her own, the song is both a literal embodiment of his mission to provide musical therapy for fans across the globe. The comments most shared from listeners are how the felt every word and that the song hits hard, As Breezy prepares his new project, Catch a Breeze, he’s just at the beginning of exploring this sensitive side of himself more fully.

SVMI Returns With Track, ‘Milan’ From ‘Ma Mood’ EP

With his previous single ‘P.O.P (Hold It Down)’ garnering strong support and rave reviews in the few weeks since its release from tastemakers such as BBC 1Xtra, KISS Fresh, Capital Xtra, Notion, Noctis Magazine, GRM Daily, Mixtape Madness and Link Up TV, Manchester rising star SVMI is not resting on his laurels and is circling right back with a new offering titled ‘MILAN’, which is produced by long-time collaborator LiTek (Rag’n’Bone Man, Bugzy Malone, Central Cee) and will lead up to the release of his debut EP with NQ Records titled Ma Mood on June 25.

Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Milan’, SVMI says, “the track is me wanting to get out of town to escape the drama and negativity. I was tired of people getting onto me for doing music, and you can hear me responding on the verses. There was a lot going on when I made this song, from girl trouble to dealing with jealousy and spite, and the track perfectly captured my frame of mind. I wrote the song just when I was making that transition into being an artist and that’s not as easy as people think. Sometimes you just want to drop everything and fly away”.

Having broken into the scene in Manchester as a teenager creating captivating music videos for the likes of Aitch and Izzie Gibbs, SVMI began making music himself a couple of years ago and has already amassed nearly five million plays, bolstered by his breakthrough single ‘Bait Lies’, which blew up last summer, as well as fan-favourites ‘Old Friends’ and ‘Timeout’.
