Song of the Day: Soul Ties – Carmen Marie

CARMEN MARIE is one of those genre defying singer/songwriters whose signature sound is uniquely their own. Hailing from Streatham, South East London, CARMEN MARIE has an emotive honesty and rawness the like of which is truly rare and certainly distinguishes her as an artist set to breakthrough in the UK and internationally.

Heavily drawing influence from RnB, Jazz and Neo Soul, Carmen’s vocals and unique curation of ‘melodic alternative slow jams’ give this ever-evolving singer a certain ambiguity, beyond that of a conventional artist.

After the success of her debut single ‘Hopeless’ in 2018, Carmen has racked up 70k+ combined streams to date. Having found herself on various Spotify playlists, the first single from her forthcoming EP ‘High Day,’ received much the same response. Her latest effort, the title track from the EP ‘Soul Ties’  deals with the depth and dangers of relationships tapping in, once again, to her uniquely personal melodic genius.

EP Review: Probably Crying – Girl Wilde

When I first hit the play button on GIRL WILDE‘s latest EP, ‘Probably Crying’, I wasn’t only instantly hit by the explosive combo of electro pop and 90’s inspired grunge rock, but her alluring vocals that could rival the likes of Gwen Stefani.

Don’t get caught up in the fluffy frills with a slight rebellious streak, if you’re planning to listen to this EP. Beyond the fun-packed arrangements, the LA artist bravely taps into her vulnerability and covers personal and deep-rooted subjects such as depression (in ‘I Don’t Wanna Die,’ ‘Probably Crying’), female sexual desire (‘WeT’), and anger management (‘BATSHiT’).

Although the above subjects are often swept under the carpet, the message in this EP is clear and simple: it’s OK to experience those feelings, so embrace them!

‘Probably Crying’ is one pretty neat package – why not check it out below…

Rocky Questions The Ups And Downs Of Relationships With Debut Single, ‘How Will I Know’

Drawing comparisons with greats such as Nina Simone, Erykah Badu, and Billie Holiday, as well as future legends like Janelle Monae and Macy Gray, South Korea-based songstress, ROCKY has released her exquisite new offering ‘How Will I Know’, the first taste of her anticipated debut project – set for release early 2020 – with a second single coming next month.

Produced by Defnelson and written by ROCKY herself, the single tackles the common question “are they into me?” as it explores the good and the bad of relationships and situationships, the song lets you know when to cut the person you’re dating off. ROCKY’s raspy jazz vocals are offset by dark hip hop instrumentals, creating the perfect mood for a song about love in the dating apocalypse.

Alongside her exciting new music, ROCKY recently published her first poetry book titled ‘Blue Bird’, which saw the Montreal native exploring themes around blackness, womanhood, freedom, self-love, and their intersectionalities, to rave reviews. However her creative outlets don’t end there, she also appeared in Korean TV drama series WWW earlier this summer, and has performed in three burlesque plays, produced by Starlight Burlesque, including last year’s WWC Superstars and Open Letters, and last month’s acclaimed P.U.S.S.I Whipped.
