EP Review: Nocturne – Dani Darling

Since DANI DARLING came under the NLM radar, with neo soul single, ‘2:22’ her musical direction has taken a detour – a massive detour. Her shift of direction comes in form of the six-piece EP, ‘Nocturne’.

Classic soul meets new hazy lo-fi soul, in this EP, largely in an experimental and almost stripped back setting, that’s immediately appealing. Third effort, ‘One Of Us’, displays use of sound spanning from the Golden Hollywood era, fused with a mesmerizing lo-fi hazy tone providing that four-on-the-floor pattern.

With the exception of concluding piece, ‘Stranger’, all of the singles were no longer than two-and-a-half minutes long; it’s a shame, as I would like hear more!

With her delicate vocals serving as a backdrop for the genre-bending combo, DANI DARLING proves that a great soulful piece doesn’t always have to feature the classic powerhouse performance as the main focal point. Have a listen below:

Song of the Day: Bad Bad Love – David Baron (ft. Donna Lewis)

DAVID BARON returns with his latest offering ‘Bad Bad Love’ (feat. Donna Lewis)’ released via Here and Now Recordings. This follows on from ‘People of No Concern’ (feat. Lettie & Madeleine).

The New York-born producer, arranger, mixer and engineer has an extensive list of credentials including work alongside The Lumineers, Lenny Kravitz, Shawn Mendes, Matt Maeson, Conor Oberst and Michael Jackson. He has been featured by the likes of Rolling Stone, Billboard, Earmilk, Consequence of Sound, Harper’s Bazaar, The Line of Best Fit, NBC San Diego and CNN Heroes and received radio airplay from BBC 6 Music’s Nemone and BBC Radio 3’s Nick Luscombe. He also mixed and performed on The Lumineers upcoming 2019 album, as well as mix a new song with them for the Game Of Thrones soundtrack.

Donna Lewis who lends the vocals to the single, is renowned for her hit ‘I Love You, Always Forever’ has racked up over 60 million Youtube plays, and over 58 million Spotify streams, featured extensively on MTV, reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart and ultimately reached Platinum status. Her collaboration with progressive house duo Project 46 & DubVision ‘You and I’ on Spinnin’ Records reached Top 5 on the Beatport chart.

Speaking of the track, Baron explains: “‘Bad Bad Love’ combines the angelic voice of Donna Lewis with a small string orchestra and analogue modular synthesizers. It is the mournful yearning of a mother who has been separated from her child. Achingly beautiful, heartbreaking, and appropriate for our times. The musical form is reminiscent of a canon, a repeating chord sequence of low strings that slowly blossom until taking us right back to the original question.”

EP Review: Watch The Ton3s – The Hamiltones

After appearing to be lying dormant for a few years, the recent explosion of that good old R&B, as we know it, has got REAL…and I mean SERIOUSLY real, with laid-back soulful summer vibes popping up from all directions.

Keeping that rich soulful R&B alive, are three powerhouses from North Carolina: J. Vito, Tony Lelo, and 2E – otherwise known as THE HAMILTONES.

Containing six tracks, their latest EP, ‘Watch The Ton3s’ primarily features 90’s-esque semi-chilled vibes well suited for the summer, with backing vocal arrangements occasionally adding a gospel edge. The trio each take turns and robustly deliver their classically rich soulful vocals on each and every pieces, adding that extra spice.

Since these guys first appeared on NEW LEASE MUSIC with single, ‘Pieces’, I’ve been keeping a very close eye on their next move…and I have to say that this EP has more than satisfy my curiosity – and if you’re seriously into your R&B, do not pass up on these three ton3s.
