EP Review: Take It Or Leave It – Kiana Corley

KIANA CORLEY‘s latest heartfelt EP, ‘Take it or Leave it,’ tells a story of reflecting on new love, break ups, lost love, and self reflection; a kind of reflection that can only be gained when you take a step back from that relationship. Kiana delivers the aforementioned themes in a wholesome soulful voice – a cross-between Sade and Corinne Bailey Rae – where she’s not backwards in coming forward in telling the truth.

Sonically, the five-track set goes on a journey through many different musical styles – from upbeat ukulele- infused pop to funk. Highly motivated by helping and inspiring others, through her authentically original music, Kiana hopes this EP will help with the healing process of anyone who had to go through a hard breakup.

Premiere: Hip-Hop Duo K.O.A Drops Track, ‘Classic’ Today!

Consisting brothers Austin & Jagger Spacy, K.O.A. has dished up a rather mesmerising number entitled ‘Classic’, out now for your inspection on all good download and streaming sites. Wrapped in a seamlessly soothing hip-hop/bedroom pop fusion, the duo’s latest offering is inspired by their friends who parted waves from them once they made it or ditched them over some girl.

Speaking of how the single’s release came to fruition, K.O.A says: “We never intended to release it but we played this for fun on one of our weekly lives and everyone was telling us to put it out.”

Between them, these guys from Arizona holds a very impressive CV. Austin, a multi-faceted talent, started out as a professional dancer and actor, before teaching himself to produce music whilst dancing on the 1989 World Tour with Taylor Swift. Jagger is an accomplished musician, songwriter and rapper previously signed to MMG (Timbaland’s mgmt company). While their initial releases lived in the alt/pop world, they are now leaning more into an alternative rap sound that feels honest and completely genuine.

Breana Marin Drops Infectious Track, ‘Work’

Pop/R&B artist BREANA MARIN‘s new single ‘Work,’ tells a moving story of the hardships that relationships go through while deciding if it’s a journey they want to continue.

“It’s about being in a relationship long past the honeymoon stage,” says Marin. “The point we reach where each person’s true colors are revealed, and deciding if you’re going to put the effort in to make it work.”

While the song’s context deals with a weighty emotional subject, it’s juxtaposed with R&B and pop influences mixed with a hint of island vibes to keep the tone light-hearted and fun. The lively melodies and beats paired with her lustrous vocals create a compelling dynamic that ties each element of the song together.

Breana Marin is a connoisseur when it comes to making hooks. Raised on Sade, Michael Jackson, and Prince, she honed her skills as a teen in the backseat of her parent’s car, singing lyrics to songs on the radio – and standing in front of the TV taking note of Michael Jackson videos. At 13, she began writing her own music, but it wasn’t until college where she began to find her stride. She’s taken the internet by storm from licensing hip-hop hooks to indie artists and is one of the top-performing vocalists and songwriters on the Beatstars platform, where her hooks have brought in incredible sales and racked up millions of views on YouTube. Marin is most known for her velvety smooth vocals influenced heavily by Sade and Imogen Heap. The songwriter’s impressive resume includes Fifth Harmony, Keyshia Cole, Phora, Brandy, and Letoya Luckett. Marin’s also had music featured in television shows on various networks like Starz, OWN, and Showtime.

Song of the Day: That’s On You! – Rei Ami

Released on Visionary Records/Sony Music Entertainment, Alt-pop singer and songwriter, REI AMI‘s standout new track ‘THAT’S ON YOU!’ shows off her range and versatility, opening up with a fierce yet playful rap verse before seamlessly transitioning into a soft captivating pop earworm.

The accompanying music video, directed by Kristen Jan Wong (Charli XCX, Nasty Cherry, Grace McKagan), portrays the fast rising musician as part of a bounty hunting duo who eventually seeks revenge on her partner in crime.

On the inspiration behind her new single, REI AMI shares, “THAT’S ON YOU!” is about recognizing your power again. It’s about being yourself to the fullest extent and if others don’t like it, then that’s their problem. I exist for myself and myself only. I refuse to dull myself down to make others comfortable. So if you don’t like me, baby that’s on you.”

Born in South Korea and raised in Maryland, REI AMI commanded herself into the spotlight in 2019 with the release of her three multi-faceted debut singles ‘Make It Mine’, ‘Dictator’ and ‘Snowcone’ the latter of which has since amassed over 15 million cumulative streams. Backed by co-signs from Billie Eilish, FINNEAS, and Zane Lowe, REI AMI continued to make waves with the eye-popping 2020 rap single ‘Mac & Cheese’, released via her new label Visionary Records, which led to a highly coveted spot walking in Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty runway show that same year.

Her name is a combination of two characters from the lauded anime series Sailor Moon; REI represents her softer, more delicate side and AMI showcases her braggadocious and aggressive “bad bitch” style. REI AMI best reflects the two polar sides of her personality, while also representing duality. For her, it’s not having to choose between this or that, but rather embracing both and then modeling that in her music.

“THAT’S ON YOU!” follows REI AMI’s first release of 2021, ‘Do It Right’ featuring rapper Aminé, and is the latest off her forthcoming mixtape due out this summer. Check out the official music video for the fierce single here…

Song of the Day: City View – Groov Marro (ft. Garf of Generation GT)

Although he sites a host heavyweights including Ludacris, Jay-Z, Eminem, Mac Miller, Anderson Paak and Joey Badass as strong influences, it is very evident that born and bred Philly rapper GROOV MARRO is in a league of his own.

His single, ‘City View’ captures his cocky personality and unique flow over the wavy groove of the track’s b-line . He calls upon singer Garf (of Generation GT) to drop his silky smooth vocals, which gives the production that extra spine-tingling sensation.
